[SOLVED] Installation problem

#1 Post by tolcan »

Dear Friends,
Please help. I am a new linux user.
I downloaded iso image, made usb installer, I can installed it to my notebooks they all work perfect.
But when I boot my desktop with the same usb / live. It boots up but the screen looks so weird. Please see the attached picture.
Manjaro, Parrot os and many others all work without problems on my desktop. I face this problem only with MX-linux which I want to use on my desktop only.
I also have attached inxi -Fxzr > a.txt file.
Would you please have a look and advice me how to sort this problem out?
Thank you in advance.
And thank you mx linux for staying away from system.d
Kind regards,
T.

Note: My display is high resolution 2560x1440 (Benq GW2765), could it be the problem? After boot up I managed to open the display settings but display was not identified.

its probably not the display but it may be the graphics drivers. get a similar problem when I boot my usually 64 bit machine with one of the 32 bit isos (antiX or MX).

on those machines, I use the nomodeset boot parameter. For my intel based machines, the boot code is

Code: Select all

nomodeset i915.modeset=0
the code would be different depending on your graphics hardware.

I think on the 19 series isos, the live-usb will automatically use the appropriate second code if the "nomodeset" code is used, but I don't quite remember.

FYI: mx "test" repo is not the same thing as debian testing repo.

Thanks oracle but it did not help. Do you recommend to buy a Graphic card :) ? or should I wait for newer kernels 5.+xx for MX in the future ? I don't know if there is a possibility to update the kernel in the iso file?
Thank you anyway for the prompt reply... :)

Here's a work around that you could try. Use MX package installer to install a 5 series kernel on one of your working laptops and then create a snapshot of that laptop which you can the use to install MX on the desktop.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Or just replace the kernel on the Live USB: viewtopic.php?f=23&t=51575

Solved : Re: Installation problem

#7 Post by tolcan »

Dear Friends,
Thank you so much for your help! My problem is solved.
I will try to explain how it is done so that it might help some other people in the future.
1. download fresh mx_install.iso file. install it on a memory stick(create mx linux live usb). That must be writable. Read only does not work. That is done during creating the live usb creation. (There is a tool in Mx linux for that if you have another working mx linux machine)
2. boot up any computer with the memory stick. install 5.2 or higher kernel on it. (it is in the package manager already)
3. there is a build in tool in mx linux to update the kernel, it will ask you to remaster it. Do it it! When it is done go and check your kernel version (uname -r)
if the kernel on the usb live is updated you are good to go..

Best wishes!
Cheers,
T.

Please edit your original post #1 (via the pencil icon at the top right) and add [SOLVED] to its subject. This makes it easier for others when they're searching the forum looking for solutions to the same question or problem. Thanks.

Also as a note to others, what he's talking about is to burn the MX iso to a USB stick using MX Live USB Maker, not "installing" MX to the USB which would entail running the MX Installer. Apparently there was either something wrong with either the originally-downloaded iso file, with its burn to a USB stick or an issue with running the stock 4.19 kernel on his particular hardware and he needed a newer kernel, that caused the video issues when running a live session (not an installation issue as the OP hadn't even run the installer yet).
