Code: Select all

BIOS: ASUSTeK v: 0701 date: 11/27/2014
looks like legacy BIOS, otherwise it would say UEFI.

Grub needs to be installed in the MBR on legacy BIOS computer systems. You can fix that by booting your live media and running Applications -> System -> Boot Repair and reinstalling grub to the MBR (Master Boot Record.)

Edit: I may be wrong. It may be a UEFI system after all, from looking at the pictures of the "Configuring the USB ports using the BIOS" section of the manual:
https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/Desk ... _E9646.pdf
It could be that Asus is just calling it BIOS. I don't know. But the images don't look like 8-bit color to me, which is all that legacy BIOS supports IIRC.

Edit 2: Looking at that image in the manual at a higher zoom, I see now that it says "UEFI BIOS."

I can't tell for sure from the inxi -F output if you booted UEFI (others might be able to). If this command succeeds and shows files then you have booted UEFI:

Code: Select all

ls /sys/firmware/efi
If you did not boot UEFI, that would explain why you can't install UEFI. If you did boot UEFI then one of the installer devs can try to help you with installing UEFI.

Code: Select all

$ ls /sys/firmware/efi
ls: cannot access '/sys/firmware/efi': No such file or directory

This confirms what JayM saw in your inxi output (reading comprehension fail on my part). You booted the live system in Legacy (BIOS) mode. This makes it impossible to install in UEFI mode. Our live system supports secure boot, in case that helps. You may need to change the boot mode from Legacy BIOS to UEFI in order to boot the live system in UEFI so you can then install UEFI.

Some of my machines let me choose Legacy and UEFI bootloaders in the BIOS/UEFI bootloader menu. But other machines will only show Legacy bootloaders or UEFI bootloaders in the bootloader menu depending on the settings.

I'm sorry about the added hurdle. It's not our idea. UEFI is set up so you can only install UEFI if you booted UEFI.

On our live system, one easy way to tell if you've boot Legacy or UEFI is the Function Key menus at the bottom of the screen. Those Function Key menus only show up in our live legacy bootloader. The live UEFI bootloader is standard Grub2.

See https://mxlinux.org/wiki/system/uefi/ and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLFUZ6LtqiE.

Edit: especially the video! Sounds like Dolphin Oracle once experienced the same thing you are and he shows you what to look for in your UEFI settings to force booting in UEFI-only so you can install antiX in UEFI mode. (You have to boot the USB as UEFI to install as UEFI otherwise you can only install in legacy, which sounds a lot like what you experienced.)

Seems like you are running live with persistence (which makes the RAM use even more impressive). Frugal or on a usb device?

On a usb device with static persistence. Yes, indeed. I thought of trying given all the fuss on the web about plasma been lighter and so far I'm really impressed the way it behaves and response; fast! In the past I avoided it because 1, it was too heavy and 2, I found it overwhelming and tiresome with so many options, menus and sub-menus to do simple tasks but that's changed as well, it still requires some learning but it seems to me to a lesser degree. I have another usb with antiX too but running XFCE and ram usage is a bit bigger, 450mb on boot which makes it even more impressive, like I said, those guys on the KDE community are doing really good. BTW, I used the core x64 iso image. I installed kde-plasma-desktop which doesn't install all the KDE stuff but basic ones only plus a few other/neccesary packages: powerdevil, systemsettings, kmenuedit, kde-runtime, ksysguard, kwin-x11, plasma-browser-integration and of course all X related packages.
