Or is this a replacement for Thunar File Manager?

Jerry mentioned quick startup but right now I log into MX and the desktop is literally "there", no waiting.

Do we lose the whisper menu?

Just trying to find out if there will be benefits other than lightweight.

Thanks
Yes @yeri you would loose WhiskerMenu if you used Flux (I'm not sure which Menu he uses)... As for boot speed that may or may not be visible (depends on how powerful your platform is). File Managers like Thunar, nemo, Nautilus, Dolphin are not Desktop managers such as XFCE, KDE, i3wm, bspwm, gnome..... . There is a ton to learn. Have fun, we'll do our best to keep you confused! :lipsrsealed: :bagoverhead:

He=me? Fluxbox has what it calls a "root menu" that users can completely design as they wish. I have set up one based on commonly used apps, since everything is available through the F6 menu and there's no use repeating everything.

@ Jerry @ manyroads
Thanks for the explaining. I was all ready to install because quite frankly it sounds amazing, but not sure I'll benefit -and yes might confuse me!

As for fast, my system is only 8GB Ram, but as Jerry suggested (and I didn't realize at the time) when I made a post regarding installing packages, the SSD makes a huge difference in loading times. Luckily is what I have on this system.

p.s. I did go to fluxbox.org and checked out the screenshots. of 20 screenshots I only recognized 1, Conky. If you don't understand it don't install it they say, wise words.
Again, thanks for the more detailed info.

Someone will explain more properly, I'm very new at this and only using Xfce. Anyway as much as I understand there are two main groups:

DE's (Desktop Environments) - XFCE, KDE, Gnome, Mate... (you have icons on the desktop)

WE's (Windows Environments) - I3, Fluxbox, hlwm, bspwm, icewm, awesome... any many more. Typically (not sure for all), you will not have icons on the desktop. The work flow with these is much faster once you get used to them. Most of them have menu by clicking (anywhere) with the right mouse click (or some hot key)

Try live antiX to see 3 different WM's

Mine is a bit different: if you don't understand it, install it and figure it out. As Adrian said to me a very long time ago: we weren't born knowing this stuff.

Thanks Buck.
When you say "workflow" makes sense as well. I am mostly on Firefox, mail and a few apps, not a power user, rarely switching between applications or using different tools.
(I tend to leave then open so the side menu has the icons.)

I'll have to check over at antix for the themes.
Thanks

Yes sorry, I meant you Jerry (our resident Fluxbox guru!) :footinmouth:

I did not know if you used the Fluxbox panel/ menu functions or went with some other combination of items like jgmenu, rofi, polybar, tint2 or the dozens of other options.

@Buck Fankers... actually the classes of Desktops are known as Desktop Environments (KDE, xfce, gnome, cinnamon, budgie...) The second group is known as Windows Managers and they come in two main flavors:
-- Tiling/ Tilers like bspwm, hlwm,i3wm,sway...
-- Stacking WMs like FluxBox, icewm, jwm....

If I do this, I own it, all broken pieces! (couldn't resist)

Good point. I just have had a few bad experiences installing something and it affected something else and this feature then didn't work and ...... well you see what I'm saying.
I then default to a full re-install - (close to 'did you try turning off and on' as you can get!)

Thanks

@yeri if you want to live vicariously... you might enjoy reading about my 'adventures' with various items discussed in this thread. There's no charge and the material is worth almost every penny of what you'll pay for access (nothing). :p
