Ouch!

#1 Post by mxer »

Just bought a pre used computer, & it came with W10, so I thought I'd just take a look at it, after waiting a long time for it to finally load up, it took about 5 minutes before I put AntiX on it - it looked so childish, & slow to boot - how do people put up with it, let alone pay for it! :exclamation:

They don't know that they have a choice and they also don't know that, historically, Microsoft has been low-balling the actual hardware requirements to adequately run their operating systems.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

I found Windows virtually unusable even on new powerful computers that had regular rotational HDDs. SSD is a must if you want to run Windows.

I use Win10 at work (i5/SSD) and at home when I must (i5/HD/laptop) - e.g. vba in excel. Normally on my home machines I use MX 19 or Mint Cinnamon 19.2 (I've preferred MX recently).
Win10 works fine on the hardware described above. I dislike the built-in tracking which is why for home use I've returned to the Linux fold after a long absence and even installed OpenVPN.
I was really pleased at how far the major distros have come.
Linux is now mature, but Win10 also does the job, even if we still dislike the corporates behind it.
If I was into gaming I would definitely run that software on Windows.
Lets not forget which OS hardware manufacturers put most effort into supporting.
MX Linux 21.3 64 bit, Asus M4A77T, Athlon II X2 260, Radeon HD5570, Realtek RTL8192EE PCIe Wireless Network Adapter, 16Gb RAM, 2 x 500Gb Sata SSD

I got a Win10 laptop system a few years back. I wanted to keep Win10 on it to test dual booting. When I first logged in to Win10 it wanted my wifi info so it could automatically update itself. It did, and by doing so it broke the wifi! The machine had no ethernet connector so I had to contact customer service from a Linux machine, download the fixed drivers, copy them over to the Win10 box via sneaker net and then install them which was non-trivial but doable with the customer service rep on the line.

I have a few laptops - 4 lenovo X230 machines and others. I have been stockpiling those x230 machines - last one I bought for $60. Great shape - hardly used ! Anyway it came with win10 , I installed Debian buster and everything worked great.
Then , just out of curiousity I booted into the win 10, Horrible experience. It went into a 60 minute update without asking. Then after it rebooted , it had an error mesasge that the update failed and then it took another 30 minutres to uninstall itself. What a nightmare ! Horrible UI, felt like I walked into some middle eastern bazaar, with ads , all kinds of colorful boxes etc.
i dont know why anyone puts up with this stuff.
It felt like a system designed in some old socialist country - you know , lots of rules , paperwork, bureaucracy , endless waiting around , and at he end of all that .. you dont get anything of value!. Because the designers of the systems care about a lot of things .. but the one thing they dont care about at all, is whether the peasants are inconvenienced, or unhappy. Because , after all, what are they going to do?

The messages reflect the bureaucratic arrogance " wait - do not turn off machine" ( sort of like "officer is at lunch sit on bench and wait".)
And plenty of threats thrown in " Do this immediately - or terrible things will happen"
its all part of a massively tone deaf beuraucratic arrogance.
Orwell would be chuckling if he knew that people were actually handing over hard won money to install surveillance systems in their own homes. I mean, its really surreal what people put up with.

Half of the slowness is probably due to all the OEM bloatware if it's the original installation. I used to have an ultrabook, 6th gen (Skylake) Core i7 mobile CPU, 12GB DDR3-1600 RAM, 1TB HDD and Windows 10. Like you, I fired it up to have a look-see prior to installing Linux (Mint.) Like you I was negatively impressed with Windows' performance. Around 10 months later I decided to sell it so I put Win10 back on it (because that's what people expect, and yes, I was tempted to leave Mint on it.) This time though it was a plain-vanilla Win10 Pro installation without all of Asus's garbage. It was a little bit slower than Mint but not very much, and very much faster than the OEM installation of Win10 Home Edition was when I got the computer.

The "help" is equally disastrous. generally will ask a lot of stupid questions - plug your machine into the wall, the prongs on the plug must fit into the the slits in the wall socket etce etc. Treat you like you are really really brain dead.
But of course .... no real help of any sort. No problems actually fixed. No new capabilities. No. You can call some 800 number and be made to wait endlessly, if you want the same treatment from a live human voice!
I mean why?

But I look at the OS kind of like I look at my home furnace. It just works. Not looking for it to entertain me , or talk to me, or save me from the apocalypse - just burn the oil and make hot water to flow through the pipes. Do it consistently and predictably.
