Ancestris

#1 Post by Don_in_Vermont »

I am looking for the Ancestris program. I searched and found mention of it going to be placed in MX-19 TEST repro but can't find the present status. Please advise.

It was not put in the Package Installer for MX-19 because it is not in Debian 10 and I suspect it was just overlooked during development. You can download it from this page:

http://www.ancestris.org/index.html#about

It is a blob, so you can treat it this way:

1. Download it, and then extract it.
2. Copy the entire folder and paste it into /opt (where blobs such as Firefox can already be found)
3. The executable is in the /bin folder
4. You can create a menu entry for it using MX Menu editor--ask for help if you get to this step and are stymied!
Production: MX-23 Xfce, AMD FX-4130 Quad-Core, GeForce GT 630/PCIe/SSE2, 16 GB, SSD 120 GB, Data 1TB
Personal: Lenovo X1 Carbon with MX-23 Fluxbox
Other: Raspberry Pi 5 with MX-23 Xfce Raspberry Pi Respin

I must be doing something wrong because when I go to past it I receive warning of unsafe paste so I didn't do it. Please help.

Ok. I figured that out and have successfully moved ancestris directory to /opt. I looked at menu editor and looks like I could use some instructions.

Hello,

Should be in the MX19 test repository, do:

Code: Select all

su-to-root -X -c mx-packageinstaller &
... Into the MXPI test repository, tape ancestris and V 0.10.0.### should be there.

...Edit: sorry it is only into the MX18 repository yet.

Good work! I don't have it installed ATM, but I can get you started. Be sure to consult the Help file for Menu editor (button on bottom). Begin by clicking the button lower left to add custom application and this box pops up.

I filled in the top two fields, and started the third for command. You need to click on that little arrow at the right end of that field and navigate to the executable and click OK.

I set Education as the category, but you can put it somewhere else. Finally, click on the icon button and navigate to your ancestris blob and find the icon.

I could have sworn I did updated packages for MX 17-19, but they aren't in the repo. Hang on a bit, and I'll redo them.

I realized that the PPA is packaging it incorrectly as binary architecture-dependent packages, instead of architecture-independent Java packages, so corrected that. This means these packages will run on anything as long as you have Java 8 or higher.
