[SOLVED] MX19 Trouble Installing New Kernel

#1 Post by phil_n »

It was suggested to install a newer kernel that might make better use of amdgpu. When I tried I got a mess of error messages. The same thing happened on both MX19 boxes. What I think are the relevant lines from the of the console output are:
depmod...
System has not been booted with systemd as init system (PID 1). Can't operate.

DKMS: install completed.
Failed to connect to bus: Host is down
It then rebooted with the original 4.19.0 kernel.
The other machine has the same errors and more and now software installs don't complete. I'm worried about trying to reboot. :frown:
I have the entire console output that I could post if that would help.

TIA phil_n

what kernel did you install, and from what source?

and does Mx control your boot menu?

FYI: mx "test" repo is not the same thing as debian testing repo.

5.2.15-antix.1-amd64-smp
does Mx control your boot menu?
If you mean grub when booting - yes I think so.
I'm just going to reboot and see if anything has changed. Even with the errors the kernel upgrade went alright on the other box but that was with the Liquorix kernel.
Be back soon.

So inxi -S still shows the old kernel after a reboot.
$ inxi -S
System: Host: mx Kernel: 4.19.0-6-amd64 x86_64 bits: 64 Desktop: Xfce 4.14.1
Distro: MX-19_x64 patito feo October 21 2019
Grub menu had Mint on top and as default but choosing MX booted ok.

its very likely then that Mint is controlling your grub menu, so you will need to run update-grub from inside of mint.
