MX19 Final Hickups

#1 Post by phil_n »

19 is generally working well for me but there are a couple of things:

1) Grub didn't work in either of my installs (would not boot Win1o) and I had to use the Win 10 recovery drive to reset the grub path in bcdedit. For a complete grub menu - MX19, Mint, and Win10 - I have to point it to the file in the Mint (Ubuntu) folder (grubx64.efi).

2) VLC is not behaving - it won't go away when I close it. It stays in the tray (notification area?) and won't leave even if the exit option is pressed. I can only get rid of it by using ps -aux and killing the instance with kill -9.

Otherwise I thoroughly appreciate all the time and hard work put in by everyone there to produce a distro that doesn't have RedHat windoze controlling it.

Your / file system is almost full. LINUX acts weird when that is the case.

Clear up some of the space and I bet the problems go away.

Never Mind.

Unless I'm misinterpreting this (which is possible as I'm still trying to wake up) this could be the issue with VLC:

Code: Select all

Graphics: Device-1: AMD Stoney [Radeon R2/R3/R4/R5 Graphics] vendor: Acer Incorporated ALI
driver: amdgpu v: kernel bus ID: 00:01.0 chip ID: 1002:98e4
           Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.4 driver: amdgpu,ati unloaded: fbdev,modesetting,vesa
           resolution: 1366x768~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: AMD STONEY (DRM 3.27.0 4.19.0-6-amd64 LLVM 7.0.1)
           v: 4.5 Mesa 18.3.6 direct render: Yes
It looks like your ADM/ATI Radeon driver isn't being used and you have just the VESA video driver. (Edit: yes, I misread it. It's the VESA driver that's unloaded, not the ATI driver. So never mind.)

One observation: your system will be happier with one of the 4.9 kernels and installing then booting with it may solve the issues.

Downloaded 4.9.193......smp through synaptic but nothing happened. Then did a kernel install from the package manager. It went through all the motions like it was installing even to where it said it was uninstalling the 4.19 kernel. Then a message kept popping up something like 'couldn't connect to the bus. Hadn't been started with systemd init.' But it still finished ok. So I rebooted and this is what I have:

As you can see the system is still using the 4.19 kernel but at least it appears to be using the amdgpu module now.

Thanks for the help.

One other thing - it takes literally forever to shut down - 5, 10, 15 minutes. The bar moves at a snail's pace and then freezes when it gets full. Then I hit the power button.

Unlikely. There wasn't full amdgpu support in kernel 4.9 for the AMD Stoney graphics and support for freesync/adaptive sync wasn't added until 4.21
I suspect the better option would be to install a 5.x series kernel.
