If I have Firefox open maximized and open MXPI (windowed) then click back on the Firefox window button in the panel, MXPI stays in the foreground as though it isn't releasing focus. If I minimize MXPI, then I can switch back and forth between them via their window buttons. It doesn't always happen, but does so often, maybe one time out of ten. I seem to recall it happening before I installed the Nvidia driver too, but I'm not 100% positive about that.

systray icon graphic issue and no mail notification app available

#122 Post by ser_mari5ha »

Dear all,
I just installed 19.3 (upgrade the great one 18.3) and got at least 3 issues that I would like to share with you.
1) There is a strange icon bug I think, the systray icon is mixed somehow with next ones (picture attached)
2) I am not able to find a mail notification app in mx package installer. Is there any alternative?
3) I have an impression that 19.3 is slightly slower compared with super fast 18.3
Best regards
MArko

Yes, I have the same issue with icons in the Notification Area exhibiting strange behaviour, such as the borders overlapping especially when a new notification appears (such as file transfer) or some icons there showing artefacts, like a white dot at the edge of the icon.

If I change the size of the panel however slightly, the artefacts disappear, but on logout/login they come back.
This happened with nouveau and with nvidia driver.

I get occasional slight overlaps or doubled icons in tray that will go away usually after I open a program. I am using MX19 on an ACER desktop with free divers.(if I install Nvidia drivers I get BSOD on reboot so I'm using free.

Other that the weird icon behavior MX 19 has been very fast on this Athlon 64X2 with 4GB; I can not compare with 18.3 as I had not used Antix/MX in a while and have just now come "back into the fold", lol.

On the same desktop:

I have played with Solus - I like the concept of a tightly curated distro that tries to avoid system conflicts by building from scratch. Solus is very pretty and Budgie is a nice DE but REPO's are SLOOOOOOOOW.

Tried Manjaro KDE- Beautiful and fast; KDE is not the memory hog it used to be,...BUT; unfortunately very glitchy on my system with freezes and odd DE behavior. Still I admire Manjaro for making Arch accessible to non-techie types.

So I came back to an "old friend" MX and jumped right into 19 and after moving the panel to the bottom, arranging some often used icons and aps in the tray, adding two URL links to the desktop I now have a system that I am fairly confident my wife can use to jump online ad get the things she needs done with minimal problems.

one thing I did that she really liked was I added the panel icon for logout/shutdown and set it to only offer to shutdown or cancel when pushed; she likes it because 1.- red button icon that stands out and screams "I am the power button", 2.- I placed it bottom right so easy to find. 3- she can hit t and walk away; system will shutdown in @28 seconds or she can hit the shutdown confirmation that pops up and the system shuts of immediately.

MX is what I remember it being; fast, highly configurable and most important to me is that it can provide a stable usable system that lets me DO things. Ultimately my desktop is a tool that I use to accomplish things and functionality is the most important aspect; MX delivers that for me.

Black screen after suspend (with the mouse pointer working). (not everytime but sometimes. Last time when Firefox was left open with only 2 tabs - so I don't think something related to Ram) . Only way was Ctrl Alt Backspace .

(Though I think I met this feedback before)

Suspend has always been a bit flakey on my Production machine. I once solved it by switching to the Nvidia chip, another time by going to the liquorix kernel, and a third time by upgrading the kernel.

Hibernate seems (once again) not to work at all so far--but I never use it anyway.

Other: Raspberry Pi 5 with MX-23 Xfce Raspberry Pi Respin

At first install the Ram was at 340 MB on idle (when on 18.3 at 147 with more icons on panel).

Then removing Numix as I did on 18.3 and unchecking unnecessary applications from Sessions & Startup, and only a few icons on panel, I'd managed it to drop to 274 on idle when new booted.

Only installing the kernel 5.2.15 (which I happily use on 18.3) and rebooting dropped it to 226 MB on idle. (a sudden drop of 50MB which is also from 14% to 11% in my case)

Just something interesting: During the kernel installation, error messages appeared that say: init system was not systemd (PID1) ..

Edit: The "blackscreen with the mouse cursor after suspend" goes on with the new kernel. I think it's due to xfce 4.14. Kernels and commands for suspend are the same with 18.3 on other partition (the default: xfce4-session-... ).

In fact I'm sure pm-suspend will work but that doesn't lock screen.

I just put up a thread on how I get hibernation working, and also hybrid-sleep from the command line, which is a belt-and-suspenders thing that protects you against losing work if the power should go out. But, yes, a lot depends on the machine and the kernel.

for some reason the Direct Download from Sourceforge - fails NoFileFound ? ?

so, used the Torrent, instead - - worked well, downloaded in less than an Hr. ..50 seeders !.

installed into an VirtualBox - - all good.
& fell for the usual video_size_issue :frown:
& & tried to 'fix that' with Guest Additions .. . pointless, as that's not needed, anyway.
- - and GA is tricky to install, as it always needs Root permission.

finally - - started thinking - - adjust the small_screen_size in Display Properties
- - suddenly, it's Full Screen  funny that

it's an Nice Release - - isn't it ?.
