I am aware that 19.3 will not be upgradeable to final but want to make sure I can install Ancestris the proper way so at final all will go well.

Re: MX-19 Beta 3 Feedback

#402 Post by fossean »

I've noticed that the fan on my cpu cooler isn't speeding up properly when cpu is under load.

In MX beta 3 when I run stressapptest, the cpu temp. will peak at 67 celcius. The fan doesn't appear to accelerate. I have booted Windows to test it and the fan can be very clearly heard to speed up; when I run prime95 stress test, the fan holds the cpu temp. at precisely 45 celcius as set in the BIOS (see screenshot).

The cooler is quite a beefy aftermarket addition with a big fan that shouldn't struggle to keep the temperature well below what I'm seeing in MX, so it would be good to fix this!

edit: looking at the info below, it seems that MX is mis-identifying the cpu fan as fan-1. The cpu: 0 reading is incorrect (I've opened the case to check). I imagine this can be fixed, but I don't want to break my system before asking the experts.

I used Psensor to monitor my temps, but several sensors were missing - after running sudo sensors-detect, the driver f71882fg was added to /etc/modules.

I suspect that fan1 is my cpu fan; the speed does ramp up under load, but not enough to maintain the temprature specified in BIOS settings. I wonder if it is linked to motherboard temp rather than CPU temp?

I've asked for it to be added as I will need it myself. I'm sure if it can be done, the packaging team will do it.

O.K., I think the 'problem' is actually one of my own making. Due to the extra transparency of the Linux OS, I've been confusing the CPU sensor with the CPU diode. I booted Windows again and checked in Aida64 and HWiNFO -- under load, I now see the same temps, with CPU at 67 C and CPU diode at 45 C. After a bit of research I now think the CPU sensor is inaccurate; it's supposed to measure the temp at the heat spreader, but is affected by the heat from the proximity of the VRM.

So, apologies if anyone got distracted by my post. If anything, MX seems to manage high loads better than Windows, with significantly less fan noise.

I'm trying MX19 beta3. I can't install mailwatch plugin for the panel. Synaptic gives this (for me) criptic message...

xfce4-mailwatch-plugin:
Depends: xfce-panel (<4.13) but 4.14.1-1-mx19+1 is to be installed

... and then deselects the plugin so it's impossible to install.

Before I installed clipman plugin with no problem.

Not really cryptic: that plugin you tried to install has not been ported to Xfce 4.14. I did a web search on "debian xfce4-mailwatch-plugin" and downloaded and installed the version in the next Debian version (Bullseye). It installed fine on MX-19 beta, and I'm waiting to see if it actually works.

Yes it does.

FYI I reinstalled 19b3 yesterday and this time didn't install Nvidia drivers, and just kept it at nouveau which has a working opengl renderer.. VLC plays videos and guvcview runs.

If anyone can point me toward any particular log files that might show why the renderer is "N/A" in inxi -G with the Nvidia driver installed, I can reinstall it and check the log(s) for clues. Or maybe someone with a spare desktop PC and an old Nvidia card in their junk box can test it and see if they get the same results? Or maybe any Nvidia card would work for testing if the installer offers the 340 driver in a list of choices?

XFCE-14 packages just became stable in Gentoo. I experienced quite by accident that many panel items were darkly grayed out until I activated the compositor. I'm a minimalist and hadn't activated the compositor for many years. I haven't tried MX-19 Beta yet, but some of you are might check that out. Is the compositor on by default (Window Manager Tweaks). In 18.3 compositing is off by default, but I have it turned on after installation.

I installed b3 on my 32-bit netbook in a dual-boot configuration with Win7. Grub was able to detect Windows with no problem and they both boot. 19 is fast! Faster than either 18 or Windows 7 anyway.

I tried installing MX beta 2 or 3 on the ssd and found the following - if before was installed *buntu, then the partition "/home" (ext4) is visible and saved when formatting other partitions.
If I reinstall the system on itself with the formatting of the partitions "/" and "/root", the system writes that the partition "/home" can't be detected and formats it as well.
By itself data is not saved on it (I have to restore everything from backup).
But when I installing *buntu instead of MX, I can properly format both partitions ("boot" and "/") and save the data in the partition "/home"
The disk, of course, is not encrypted in all cases.
