Thanks for the explanation, asqwerth.
asqwerth wrote: Thu Sep 19, 2019 9:12 pm Some of the themes mentioned are gtk2 themes (dust sand Mac) or gtk3 themes made for older versions of gtk3 and no longer maintained (adwaita xfce dark). Gtk2-only themes won't theme gtk3 apps, including the whole xfce 4.14. Outdated gtk3 themes may show up weird or wrong when used on newer versions of gtk3 .

So perhaps you may wish to have a separate thread discussing what themes are nice AND work well with debian buster's gtk version 3.24.
I have used all of these, even if only briefly, so they do work to some extent with MX 18.3, but don't know which GTK version that is.

To ensure MX-19 / Debian "Buster" compatiblity, should we look for themes that are explicitly stated as compatible with GTK3 ver. 3.34, or 3.3+, etc?

Just as an aside, this was interesting:
https://blogs.gnome.org/mclasen/2015/11 ... tk-update/
Oh NO! they’re breaking themes again!
I'm trying to get a handle on some of the basic concepts.
Just spent over an hour trying to track down definitive information sources for:
A simple HTML table would work very well as a concise central information source for these essential facts, but I could not find any.
  • Debian releases, code names, GTK version and kernel version
  • MX releases and their relative base versions of Debian, GTK, etc.
The result was a confusing process of jumping from one referenced source to another and another ....
Adding to the confusion about compatible themes is the fact that with some of the themes, it is not obvious which GTK version they are based on.
That is something that could be discussed in a separate thread, as you suggested.
Example: One the those themes, Adwaita Dark Green, states
Originally built for GTK 3.16 and actively maintained for GTK 3.20+.
--------------
Regarding the "likes" for the Nordic theme, I don't use it because the highlighting colors do not provide enough contrast.
The highlight contrast is also inconsistent between the base Nordic and the Nordic-bluish-accent variant.
IF that was fixed, it would be more useable, IMHO.
nixy wrote: Fri Sep 20, 2019 5:33 am Check out Qogir theme, it's the best looking theme imho.
For anyone interested, here is the link:
https://www.pling.com/s/Gnome/p/1230631/

=========
https://mxlinux.org/current-release-features/
This is a great page, but it does not state the current version number.

Although the code name changes wih every release, the base version number remains the same through all point releases.
I think it would be very helpful if the page Heading stated the base version number, like:
Current Release 18.x Features
18.x refers to version 18.0 and all version 18.x point releases
My apologies if I have swayed this thread away from it's intended use. :embarrassed:

I installed in beta 2.1 the latest version of kernel 5 from the MX repositories and greatly improved the performance of my machine, even Redshift now works well, I removed f.lux because it has no handling by graphics, only by terminal. I wanted to comment this curiosity that caught my attention.

GTK 3.xx is GNOME Tool Kit.
Previous releases were GIMP Tool Kit 1 and 2.

Breaking themes with each new release is done on purpose, the intent is to prevent theming GNOME so as to protect the 'brand', making GNOME easily recognized by it always being the same. This is also why the name of the GNOME icon set is a Sanskrit word which means the only one. Expect new GTK releases to break all themes built against earlier GTK versions.

The leading GNOME developers are Red Hat employees, and it is their product.
This is readily proven from their own team emails and blogs.

Gerson, thank you for reporting this... it is very good to know. If you run into issues using that kernel... please let us know.

I installed 19b2 into a 50GiB partition that I'd left free when I installed 18.3 Thursday. No problems with a basic installation (no encryption, /home inside root, nothing fancy.) I opted not to (re)install grub as I already had one installed by 18.

I installed the nvidia driver: no problems.

Remember the issue of peoples' mouse cursor size being reset to the default small one after they log out or restart? The solution in 18 was to add a couple of lines to a .gtkrc-2.0 file in your home directory. I confirmed that in MX-19 this file is ignored, even if you name it .gtkrc-3.0. I also confirmed that 19 doesn't appear to have the issue of users' mouse cursor size settings being lost after sessions end. My chosen cursor size in Settings/Mouse and Touchpad/Theme tab has survived several logouts/logins.

Also, I can open LibreOffice now.

I guess what I'm basically reporting is that 19b2 seems to be almost as boring of a distro as 18.3: no problems to solve ;) (though I haven't been using 19 extensively, just a few times now and then.)

Re: MX-19 Beta 2.1 Feedback

#467 Post by kmathern »

Question about $PATH, and is there something wrong with it in MX-19 beta 2.1?

$PATH is initially set up like this

Code: Select all

$ echo $PATH
/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/games:/usr/games:/sbin:/usr/sbin

I have galileo installed in /usr/local/bin (not our repo package, but the one downloaded from here: https://bitbucket.org/benallard/galileo/downloads/)

Code: Select all

$ whereis galileo
galileo: /usr/local/bin/galileo

But when I tried to run it, it looked for it in /usr/bin and it wasn't found

Code: Select all

$ galileo version
bash: /usr/bin/galileo: No such file or directory

So I did a export /usr/local/bin to PATH

Code: Select all

$ export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/bin
kent@mx:~
$ echo $PATH
/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/games:/usr/games:/sbin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin
kent@mx:~

And it now works

Code: Select all

$ galileo version
/usr/local/bin/galileo: 1.0dev

/usr/local/bin was already in $PATH, I don't think I should have had to export it again, should I?
