Tor Browser install and launching...

Hi guys...

I'm not a 100% dummy but maybe pretty close... I have spent a lot of time trying to install and launch the tor browser in MX 18.3...

The install seems to have worked but when I try to launch it i get a message that I do not have the necessary permission (permission denied) but if I open the file manager as root and go directly to the tor executible in opt/ iget a message that tor should not be run as root and it exits without going further...

Any suggestions?

Hmme, I just did this: Downloaded and verified the official archive, extracted, clicked on the launcher (desktop-file) and clicked on "connect". Which took less time then writing and typo-correcting this reply. ...
So tell us what you have done unsuccessfully. ...

Or just run from the terminal command line:

sudo apt update

and

sudo apt install torbrowser-launcher

You'll get two new menu-entries : torbrowser-launcher (which installes the torbrowser) and torbrowser-setting.

Not sure exactly why, but it seems it was necessary only to reboot MX and then the icons were in place and Tor started normally...

I think my biggest problem here may be my lack of knowledge on when and how to use the terminal and command line interface for hardly anything...

I know that typically Linux users are and expect others to be able to do CLI and Scripting, but I am really not much of a techie and not much interested in that approach. I only chose MX Linux since it has persistence support built in that actually works and allows me to run it off of a usb stick...

We're atypical. I've been using Linux for 15 years or more, first alongside of Windows then just pure Linux, and MS-DOS and some command-line Unix before that, and I feel that having to change settings or configuration via CLI or editing text files is, like having to hack the Windows registry to those same things, a failure on the part of whoever designed the OS's GUI. Even though I'm kind of a techie I always have a fictional "Great-Aunt Martha" who has limited computer skills in the back of my mind. I expect that any OS be as easy for her to figure out and use as possible, so any support requests from her are a matter of telling her "click this, then click this, then right-click this and choose that" instead of talking her through doing sudo cat /etc/foobar | grep baz >> /home/martha/baz.txt or something in a terminal.

Easy way: install torbrowser-launcher from the test repo. Done.

The MX test repo. Use MX package installer in the MX menu to install torbrowser-launcher.

Mixing MX with Debian testing repos is not a good thing at all, and likely to lead to a broken system. Our test repos are backport repos and share nothing with Debian testing except "test" in the name, though we do backport many packages from there.

Question: why do you keep posting about antiX issues in the MX boards instead of here? This is confusing to people who are trying to help you. Also, antiX has its own dedicated forum in which you may get more help/faster responses. See my signature.
