Re: Upgrade to Buster Debian 10 Broke Login GUI

Next time, first check or ask in forum.
Will do. I'm a creature of habit and when I see the MX Updater show updates, I typically install them.

Thanks for the insight. My system is restored from a backup.

One question though, since I'm relatively new to MX Linux, when will they incorporate a Debian upgrade to safely update my system?

Appreciate all of the time of the responders.

Thank you, this is great news.
For those that want to know, the plan is right now that MX-19 will ship with sysVinit as the default init system, with systemd also installed for those that want to use it (good if you like snaps). In other words, pretty much just like MX-17 and 18. We are testing builds internally right now, but betas will be public. Stay tuned.

You also can't just update from the Buster repository, since they broke systemd-shim. We have a working version in our own Buster-based MX 19 repo that fixes that.

We're also building or adding XFCE panel plugins to that repo that are compatible with our newer XFCE 4.14 prerelease panel, such as the Orage clock/calender, hotcorners, wmdock, and so on, so we're trying not to lose any of your favorite features.

@JayM et al., you guys nailed it. Along the way, I must have seen an application I wanted/needed and debian stable repository is listed within the MX Repo Manager and my inxi -r output.

I'll take care of those now. Thanks D/O for the blog info, very helpful to know the upgrade path of MX Linux.

This has been a great learning experience and I really appreciate the assistance from everyone and their sage advice.

Hmmm. Not really.

https://mxlinux.org/wiki/system/repos-mx-18/

The only places it shows the word "stable" is:

1. third party repo for Opera (disabled by default, only listed so that MX Packageinstaller>>Popular Apps can install Opera and then enable its repo for a user when requested)
2. as the title/caption for some of the sources lists.

But if you look at the actual description (to the right of each source) for each listed Debian/MX/antiX source including the ones disabled by default, the word "stretch" is used, not "stable":
antix.list

# Use with Debian Stable/stretch repositories. Set as default for antiX-17. Note new repos

deb http://repo.antixlinux.com/stretch stretch main

#deb-src http://repo.antixlinux.com/stretch stretch main

mx.list

# MX Community Main and Test Repos

deb http://la.mxrepo.com/mx/repo/ stretch main non-free

#deb http://la.mxrepo.com/mx/testrepo/ stretch test

debian-stable-updates.list

# Debian stretch Updates

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ stretch-updates main contrib non-free

debian.list

# Debian Stable.

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ stretch main contrib non-free

deb http://security.debian.org/ stretch/updates main contrib non-free

#deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ stretch main contrib non-free

Anyway, please see this link to our website: https://mxlinux.org/wiki/system/repos-mx-linux/

so you will know where you can go to get an actual listing of the default sources list for each release of MX Linux.

This is helpful if you ever inadvertently mess the repos up again and want to check your list of enabled repos against what the default position should be.

@asqwerth All of my repos now state 'Stretch' after them [except for some personal applications like MegaSync, etc] and the MX Repo Manager is a great tool to set them all back to default. I did not really use that tool before. Anyway, after running an update command, I only now show 13 packages to be installed instead of the 1,950 originally.

Again, a great learning experience, and I appreciate everyone's time.
