I would point out that antiX (aka not "Mint") might yield a better result.

I will resort to using Mint XFCE for my third machine. It installed seamlessly. I will reiterate that I have tried all recommendations you guys made before i posted. No defects in my equipment. Ive used a multitude on the computer in question with no issues. I will keep MX on my other computers.

[SOLVED] Installing MX on my HP Laptop

#14 Post by brolly »

Hi Guys

The issue i am facing is that i am trying to install MX from a USB stick. When I boot into the OS the desktop freezes. I have tried Secure and Legacy boots. No joy. I wrote the ISO to USB using Rufus in GPT and MBR modes. I have also tried the default and advanced/failsafe boot without joy. I have fiddled with boot parameters in the boot menu on standard and advanced mode. The boot parameters I have tried are the default setting, quiet slash and nomodeset. Despite my best efforts i am greeted with a frozen desktop or in nomodeset the brightness control pops up multiple windows of desktop settings. Your support is highly appreciated.

My specs are as follows:

HP Laptop 15-Bw036na
AMD A12-9720P / 2.7 GHz Max Turbo Speed 3.6 GHz Quad Core Processor
16GB RAM, 2TB HDD
15.6 HD Display (1366 x 768) Resolution
Integrated AMD Radeon R7 Graphics

Oh the rufus one , well just pointing out possibilities since i was having difficulties with Rufus , then difficulties from installing , i have 2 flash drive and none of them is working correctly (freezing , black screen , grub loader only) . After resolving those issues it work perfectly (i.e. using another live medium namely another flash drive) . Or maybe it's firmware , old bios , persistence boot , etc . Please tell us what measures you have already done , that way we will eliminate possibilities and pinpoint the source of problem .

Speaking of another live medium , how about try live DVD ?

Please try to return the settings to default when you try the hypothesis .

Computer bios etc are up-to-date. Yup i've tried the live dvd, MX live USB maker, WoeUSB, Unetbootin, Rufus. Tried all possible parameters and options on the boot screen. Tried secure and legacy boot Downloaded ISO is intact. tried 4 USB stick drives and nothing works. The only option that i use which gives me a responsive desktop is the "nomodeset" parameter but graphic are low and function keys don't work. I made a live image of one of my working systems. I upgraded the kernel to "testing" 4.20 it worked but broke virtualbox to name a few apps

Hmmm..

Restore BIOS to default. Have you tried reset to factory mode ? ( some HP suggest pushing ON/OFF button for 45 seconds)

Remove your battery off from your laptop.
Remove your HDD or SSD form your laptop.
Remove ram memory from your laptop.
If possible to remove CPU ( you also can apply thermic paste)

Leave your laptop without Battery, SSD/HDD, Ram or CPU some minutes. Do not ask me why !

Re assemble and give a new try.

If not. I will recommend you SparkyLinux instead of Mint. ( get stable release 4.10 equipped with LXDE Desktop or Sparky 5.8 RC equipped with LXQT or XFCE desktop - this version of Sparky will be latest stable based in Debian 10 after some days).

Have luck .

Once this worked for me (though it was not MX) and other suggestions worked for me, too (in the past): Checking the downloaded iso hash and using a 2GB usb particularly.

Meanwhile, I've been using the same "very old" and no-name 2GB usb always for it's trusted by me so much (It was just a present of the internet service provider, almost 13 years ago :D )

I'd read so many things on Google particularly about Sandisk that they're problematic.. So, no matter brand-new or old, it's best to find / borrow etc. a trusted usb that's proven to always work..

And just maybe you'd like to try:

Take one of the usbs and dd zero (low level format)... Then with Gparted create a new partition.. But as I say, Sandisk's are notorious about these subjects, if possible try also another medium , dvd etc as already mentioned ..

I only use Sandisk and they perform great for me. I'd be wary of using any 13 year old usb stick though, especially if it's had hard use, and 2 gb will not hold many Linux iso's today. USB sticks are cheap as dirt right now. I just bought a 120 gb Sandisk USB for about $20. 16 gb Sticks can be bought for a few dollars, I've not seen any 4 gb sticks for awhile, much less 2 gb sticks. Though I probably still have a few in drawer somewhere :)

I've decided to use Mint XFCE for the machine in question. It installed and ran flawlessy.
