Yes. There are many Windows based tools for dealing with WinPE and Rufus should handle it. Trying to do Windows things from Linux seems unnecessary since there is probably no use for your WinPE unless you run Windows.brolly wrote: Sun Jun 30, 2019 10:13 am Yes the ISO i was trying to write is based on WinPE. Does this mean i should stick to using Rufus in a Window$ environment?
Please recommend a Rufus alternative for Linux that ACTUALLY works like Rufus

Note to self and others: SysVinit is a good option. However if you run into problems try with systemd first. This applies to AppImages, Flatpaks, GitHub packages and even some Debian packages.

Re: Please recommend a Rufus alternative for Linux that ACTUALLY works like Rufus
If you guys recall, I had a lot of problems with a Sandisk USB, where the Ubuntu based tools wrote ISO but the Debian based ones like MX wouldn't. Eventually I gave the stick away, with a recent version of MX on it, to a Windows diehard who was comp-laining of slow speeds with Win 10 on his PC!

***Update*** WoeUSB did the trick but what im not sure off is whether it supports both secure and legacy boot? I am also keep to try Unetbootin. I can't install recent versions on MX. If i'm not mistaken i think I saw a "wget"..."git" terminal version somewhere. Please help.

Re: Please recommend a Rufus alternative for Linux that ACTUALLY works like Rufus
Someone on the Debian forums mentioned that the only Linux tool he found that worked for MX and them was something they found on pendrivelinux (?). I think it had "linux" and "live" in the app name and was downloaded from sourceforge...

a google search would not resolve the problem ?
Code: Select all

What i've done in the past (for a MBR-partitioned, fat32-formatted stick), is extract the MX ISO content to the root of the stick, then install syslinux to the stick. This way you do not end with a read-only stick as you would with "dd". Works for me as an installer or rescue tool. If you are going to use persistence, the MX USB Maker with ext4 is a better, supported solution.
Re: Please recommend a Rufus alternative for Linux that ACTUALLY works like Rufus
Meanwhle, I always wondered if one day any Linux guy(s) get(s) permission and make Rufus' Linux version.
When asked "Do you plan to port Rufus to Linux?" , Pete Batard says :
"I certainly wish I could, because it sounds like a nice challenge, but I just don't have the time for that. ... Then again, Rufus is Free Software, so if anybody wants to try to port it to another platform, they are very welcome to do so! "
" Do you plan to add Linux persistent partition support (e.g. for Ubuntu)?"
"Yes. It is being added for the Rufus 3.6 release "

I read that earlier in the day. I astomished by the fact that there millions of software developers out there but not even one has thought of a "rufus type" tool for LinuxHuckleberry wrote: Sun Jun 30, 2019 3:30 pm Meanwhle, I always wondered if one day any Linux guy(s) get(s) permission and make Rufus' Linux version.
