Daily use of MX Linux (and Antix if you use it as well)

#1 Post by ChrisUK »

I often wonder what people use Linux for - years ago, it wasn't really up to the task of regular Desktop/Laptop use. Many native programs were buggy or just not up to the task. Nowadays, apart from a few specialised programs, Linux can do all that Windows and IOS can. But what do most here actually use it, and in particular, MX/Antix for?

I'll go first ;) This is average weekly usage:
  • Internet and Email... that's pretty much a given I guess. Can include everything from browsing to shopping to banking.
  • Importing Pictures from Cameras.
  • Editing, and when needed, printing Pictures.
  • General housekeeping (system backup and general file backup/sync)
  • Programming, not something I do much anymore due to difficulty typing (there's loads of ways to get started programming with Linux, Python is a good place to start, IMO).
  • Scanning/Printing etc. Linux supports all of my scanners and printers, and most printing is done wirelessly over the network.
  • Letter writing, shopping lists, keeping track of rent and other finances (Libre Office handles all that)
  • Running Virtual Machines (Virtualbox). I've not found viable alternatives to iTunes and Samsung Kies, so I run them in Windows VMs - the VMs don't have network/internet access.
  • Video encoding/editing. Some of the TV episodes I get need re-encoding before they are watchable on standalone players - wildlife videos I make need editing (for my own use, nothing fancy).
  • Burning various video to DVD.
  • Editing playlists for mp3 player.
I'm pretty sure that I've forgotten a few things, but you get the idea. So, how many of you actually "use" MX/Antix? And for what?

I use MX for everything I can do on a computer, I also use it for things I can't do
Every once in a while I fire up Antix if I feel like a change & learning something different.

I can't use MX Linux for Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer. I'm simply more used to those over GIMP and Inkscape. Any Microsoft Office 365 tasks for work I also do in Windows or Mac. Personal documents are all done using LibreOffice.

I use MX for everything I need on computer

Have Win7 in Virtualbox but the only time I run it seems to be after changing a kernel, to see if it still works --can't remember when I actually needed Win7.

All my course work so far (fingers crossed) has been done in LibreOffice and saved in .doc or .pdf format to satisfy the school's insistence that all our schoolwork has to be "in Microsoft format." I have argued my case a little bit, like, "Why lock everybody into a single vendor? Why wouldn't you want options? Why spend the money on licensing fees?" etc. They do the same with textbooks that even the professors hate - but the textbook company has a lock on most subjects. Between Microsoft for schoolwork and Pearson for school books, it just looks like some kind of illicit back-room deals have been made with somebody at the school.

Ooops! I'm off topic, lemme fix that:

I use MX daily for email and browsing, LibreOffiice, Galculator, Xournal and stuff for school, Audacious for customizing music, and I make Live USBs to restore old computers and donate them to private schools, churches, charities, and even one to a nursing home so some grandparents use it to keep in touch with their kids and grandkids without having to squint at a smartphone and push tiny buttons with shaky, unsteady hands. I hope I get to do that again, the old people were so happy to have a way to keep up with their families.

Usual stuff....

online browsing,
ebay,
youtube,
recording my (playing of) instruments,
creating videos,
looking at my pictures/videos taken on my cameras,
listening to music,
watching (tutorial) videos,
watching my online friends videos,
hosting a week of my forums weekly challenges,
various music & computer forums,
etc, etc.

Most of my online time is spent in forums, helping out where I can, or learning new tricks from others. :)

I use MX Linux daily for all my computer requirements and find it and excellent distribution for my older AMD based desktop. I have used many different distributions over the years and so far find MX suits my needs the most and have used Linux for about 15 years now. Well done keep up the good work :number1:

MX has completely replaced my windoze and Mac. I mean I do everything with MX, including work related projects.
I do have 1 computer with Windoze, but technically it's my son's so until he get the force to see the bright side, he wants to play his games on there.
FYI- I had bought that computer for myself but it was hijacked.

Like Richard, i use MX for everything of my own. I still have Win XP on an old laptop just in case I get query from a Windows craft group that I once moderated. Main
project at present is the recovery of several thousand 1930's to 19?? documents for digital archiving. Others in the team are Windows diehards, working with Photoshop
software, I am using GIMP (took a week or so to learn), making good progress. Unlike most other users of MX, I use Lyx for authoring text docs.
Backup: Dell9010, MX-19_B2, Win7, 120 SSD, WD 232GIB HD, 4GB RAM
Primary :Homebrew64 bit Intel duo core 2 GB RAM, 120 GB Kingston SSD, Seagate1TB.
MX-18.2 64bit. Also MX17, Kubuntu14.04 & Puppy 6.3.
