[Solved] NordVPN terminal app and smb/cifs/samba

#1 Post by tadream »

First and foremost I'd like to thanks the developers of MX for their hard work, and to the contributors of this forum for the support.

I've been using MX for the last couple of years without system wide VPN. Since last year I have a NordVPN subscription I'm really content with. Lately, I've been connecting to the internet using VPN through the NetworkManager Applet.

NordVPN also provides a terminal app which offers great additional features (CyberSec, KillSwitch etc.) but for some reason blocks smb/cifs/samba connection on my home network to and from my desktop computer running MX. It's working problem free when the NetworkManager Applet handles the VPN connection, but I do miss the features that the terminal app offers.

Has anyone had this problem and found a solution? 9_9 The topic "native nordvpn app on MX linux" inspired me to post this subject, hoping for a similarly brilliant solution.

Thanks all!

First question comes to mind: Is NordVPN's "terminal app" prepared to cater for locale network related connectivity?
I can understand when going through OpenVPN-Network Manager , that this is handled properly, but not sure
whether the terminal-app enbaled nordVPN user daemon takes care of locale network connectivity like samba. I guess we might simply miss a option when starting nordvpn user-daemon. Two things I would do: First what is nordvpn customer servivc answering to the first question.
And, if the "terminal app" is designend to cater for local network and if it works when running in systemd, I guess we need to find a option to ensure it works also in sysVinit. ... :snail:

Contacted NordVPN support who advised me to whitelist the relavant ports. I did that and can confirm it works.
Thanks!

The commands

nordvpn whitelist add ports 137 138
nordvpn whitelist add port 445

did the trick for both TCP and UDP protocols.
