Which Remote Desktop Software you like the best on MX?

#1 Post by Buck Fankers »

I saw mentioned AnyDesk but couldn't locate it in MXPI, I can see references for teamviewer such as "If I have to use it..."

So, what is your preferred app on MX for remote assistance. I never used any before, but I'm going over the ocean and I will convert several friends older windows computers to MX Linux, none of them ever used anything but windows before, so I'm guessing I will need something like this  and I better start learning & using one. If there are several to choose, I would like the one, that is as simple as possible. And robust.

Beside finding out which one is the simplest, I would like to know which one you prefer.

P.s.
Hope I used correct forum section, couldn't locate 'off topic'.

Teamviewer is in the MXPI if I am not mistaken. Have never tested it MX-MX though.. only MX with a Windows remote, and it was very important back when to have the same version installed (so 5, 6, 7, 8 and so on).

Always went very well back when, I doubt that will have changed :)
MX-23.6_x64 July 31 2023 * 6.1.0-37amd64 ext4 Xfce 4.20.0 * 8-core AMD Ryzen 7 2700
Asus TUF B450-Plus Gaming UEFI * Asus GTX 1050 Ti Nvidia 535.247.01 * 2x16Gb DDR4 2666 Kingston HyperX Predator
Samsung 870EVO * Samsung S24D330 & P2250 * HP Envy 5030

I use TeamViewer for MX to MX administration and all works fine.

I used both TeamViewer and AnyDesk on Windows before and actually could not tell which one was better. Both did their job so I actually don't know where the bias of some users against TeamViewer comes from.

And since TeamViewer installation on MX via Package Installer is easy as pie and AnyDesk needs to be fiddled around with, my personal choice was very easy.

However ... MX Package Manager also provides a few other choices for remote desktop, which I haven't tested.

AnyDesk.
Note: As I'm using dark theme, which results in a "dark input field" issue in AnyDesk,
I tweaked the default desktop-starter by changing the Exec-line as such,

Code: Select all

env GTK2_RC_FILES= GTK_DATA_PREFIX= GTK_THEME=Adwaita /usr/bin/anydesk

OK thanks, will try them both, teamviewer and AnyDesk. How do you usually install it on MX? With *.deb file or something more complicated like compiling it yourself? I see I can download it from their webpage as compressed tar.gz

And I posted one more question about teamviewer in another forum, sorry for 'attacking' you from all sides

Will definitely look at teamviewer, thanks.

I installed AnyDesk, tried it and I like it so much I will not even bother for now with any other remote help software.

@fehlix had some restrictions problems with Teamviewer (easy to meet the limit)

AnyDesk, works great, you can even share files with it. (just use copy/paste, super cool and easy)
Also I like, that each computer gets seems like unique address, (accessing number) so I will just have to write down every number for every computer I will take care and I will always be able to make easy connection without the need to exchange invitation code over the email first.

Also, not sure about sound yet, but while testing, I was running on 'remote' laptop a video and sound come through to my 'main' computer. I need to check this out, if connection can simultaneously be used as voice over internet. So I can at the same time have voice conversation with owner of the computer, explaining what I'm doing. Not sure yet if microphone provided sound or it came 'internally' from video though.

Regardless, I really like this program! I posted request to be added to the MXPI and @fehlix provided necessary files.

Thanks for AnyDesk at MXPI ... I will test it, but so far Teamviewer was always very good tool.
