Re: MX-18 beta 1 feedback
OK seem to have broken the install. Setup two samba shares to connect continuously, now will not load past login. Tried with both user and root.

Re: MX-18 beta 1 feedback
I've looked at that in the past, but because the fallback EFI is in the same location for all OS's, including windows, we have avoided setting it. Its getting to be less of an issue, but in the early days of UEFI boots, many manufacturers shipped stupid UEFI setups that only looked at the fallback location, which could be bad for dual-booters that decide not to dual boot anymore.fehlix wrote: Mon Dec 03, 2018 8:04 pmOne easy way to have MX18b1_x64 to get installed in Oracle VM VirtualBox UEFI mode together withmanyroads wrote: Mon Dec 03, 2018 4:59 pm I installed on a VirtualBox using UEFI... the install and build went well; as did my customization. straight booting into the Grub-menu without any issues in UEFI mode:
Booting MX18-Linux in UEFI-mode in VirtualBox
This in UEFI install from the LiveISO on Oracle VM VirtualBox.
After installation, rebooting with VirtualBox internal boot menu by selecting manual /EFI/MX18/gubx64.efi.
Within booted MX18-Linux those additonal stepps need to be performed or verified:
1- check/create missing fstab-entry for ESP/efi partition
2. mount ESP-partition under /boot/efi:Code: Select all
echo "UUID=$(lsblk -no 'UUID,LABEL,FSTYPE,PARTLABEL' | grep -m1 -iE 'vfat|esp|efi' | cut -d' ' -f1) /boot/efi vfat defaults 0 0" | sudo tee -a /etc/fstab UUID=A555-0A81 /boot/efi vfat defaults 0 0
3. install MX18-efi bootloader as default/fallbackCode: Select all
sudo mount -a
That's it. Reboot and the Grub menu will show up.Code: Select all
sudo "mkdir -p /boot/efi/EFI/BOOT && cp /boot/efi/EFI/MX18/grubx64.efi /boot/efi/EFI/BOOT/bootx64.efi"
![]()
Note: The above steps could also made within booted LiveISO or potentially as a nice adjustment to the existing installer.

Re: MX-18 beta 1 feedback
At least it could be considerd optional, i.e. if no fallbak /EFI/BOOT/bootx64.efi is already available we could provide the MX-fallback.dolphin_oracle wrote: Tue Dec 04, 2018 12:52 pmI've looked at that in the past, but because the fallback EFI is in the same location for all OS's, including windows, we have avoided setting it. This would help lot of user who cannt boot even after having susccesfully installed, for whatever reasons.
Or even smarter: not copy MX18/grubx64.efi but use shims real fallbak.efi copied to /EFI/BOOT/bootx64.efi and have
/EFI/MX18/BOOT.CSV with the content of pointing to boot into MX. By this we could even reinstall grub (i.e. regenrating grubx64.efi).
shims falback.efi to look for /EFI/MX18/BOOT.CSV which inturn boots into /EFI/MX18/grubx64.efi .
The /EFI/MX18/BOOT.CSV would look something like
Code: Select all
grubx64.efi,MX_Linux,,MX Linux Grub Boot Menu

EDIT: Note the bootx64.efi falbak is normaly not used, even provided by MS. It's just made such in case that it will always boot in to winOS.
winOS has normal it's own nvram entry which is used. only of nvram table is empty the fallbak get's triggered. and if we show an option to boot into MX in such a case, the user still can boot winOS. we could even offer to revert bak the original ms-fallback....
