Look, if users like me can give the developers feedback on how to make the OS foolproof it would make life easy for the team too, so I hope they take some of the points made in this thread to heart.

I think you would be much happier with mx if you could get it installed.anthonycea wrote:Look, if users like me can give the developers feedback on how to make the OS foolproof it would make life easy for the team too, so I hope they take some of the points made in this thread to heart.

Most likely, this is just an experiment with an old box, you know, back in the old days we would tell everyone how easy it was to convert a Windows box over to Linux and it was as easy as running the install CD, well, it is not that easy anymore since Linux Distros are so large, you need the hardware too, something with some to run these modern Linux programs.

herbsluftwm. I hate it, and I agree with you, it shouldn't be there.
Howabout leave its files in place but omit its entry from the "Other Desktops" menu?please take that desktop out of the next version
I too recall "getting lost in there", but when that happened I just keyed Ctrl+Alt+F6 and restarted slim.

You don't need to know how to code, but you must learn to read instructions carefully and follow them correctly. You need to have ordered or downloaded the full-featured version of antiX, not the core or barebones version, which is for more expert users to build up themselves. With the core version, obviously all the useful programs and application wouldn't have been there on the disk and you would have to install what you want from the repository after installing the core version.anthonycea wrote:I am doing the best I can with very limited knowledge to be honest, I am not a coder though and have no knowledge of command line computing.
And you have to accept that with the limitations of your hardware, you cannot be running the latest versions of what you knew as KDE in Mepis 3.3. That doesn't exist anymore. Even MX16 which uses XFCE instead of modern KDE (called Plasma) as a desktop interface will be almost too large to fit into your 512MB RAM memory. When you boot up MX16 without opening any other programs you will have used 300+MB of RAM. That leaves you with less than 200MB for opening an internet browser (so you can't open too many tabs) or playing music/video or working on a document.
The recommendation of antiX is because it runs on less RAM. However that means its interface is going to be less flashy with fewer bells and whistles. It has nothing to do with needing to use the terminal and command line instructions. There are still graphical tools and interfaces (if you installed the full-featured version) to help you do tasks; it just looks more minimalistc.

I understand the limitations of what I am trying to do with this limited hardware and am thankful for your understanding and all the help this forum has provided, this version of Bodhi seems to be running fine on this machine so far and they had an app downloader that seems to work like Windows, you search for an app then download it and it gets it on the OS, I just downloaded a WPS word processing program and it installed it, things like this make a difference to novices.

What I've done is get a couple of old desktops from the recycle shop, without HDD, that match RAM I already have (DDR2). The first unit (lenovo) was an office job type with DVD R/W. I was lucky to find 4GB RAM in the second system so have spent my meager funds on a new HDD (instead of just an external 1TB for the same price). The new HDD just has MX-16 and antiX partitions with lots of storage space. I even have a spare sata connection laptop HDD in the drawer with mx-14, mx-15, nx-16 and antix16. I can swap the Lenovo DVD connector to this old HDD at a pinch.
Once you have USB ports, a Live install or running Live USB system opens up so many options. Do hunt around for something if you can.
I find antiX quite a challenge even though I'm comfortable with M11 and MX. As people have noted, antiX is bare bones and geared for older hardware with potential limitations.
* Keep an eye out for anything being tossed out at this time of year too.

FWIW, trinity KDE3 desktop is still used by a few distros.what you knew as KDE in Mepis 3.3. That doesn't exist anymore

I booted the newly-released (just this week) exegnulinux and it is fine, as in, same as ever... just like old times.

Not being snide or dismissive, but if you are happy with Bodhi you should stick with it. As an example, you cannot put a two stage high capacity furnace in a small apartment.
As far as easy software installation, that is exactly what MX has, but needs a moderately capable machine to run it. It is basically point, click and install.
Windows users have come over with moderately capable hardware and have learned quickly and easily. The improvements in software and drivers for hardware have been so much improved since 15 tears ago when I started with Linux. That does not mean there is not a learning curve, and as important a Windows unlearning curve.
OK, I will get off my soapbox.
