OS Poll

#1 Post by richb »

To get a sense of what forum members are using I created this poll. It is limited to four choices assuming forum members would not be using something else.

I think that most users here are probably using some flavor of Mepis, AntiX or MX-14; although they may not be using it as their primary OS.

I used Mepis for my main OS for a number of years (starting with the Mepis 3.3, upgrading through Mepis 11), in dual boot configs with various Windows versions.

But, after development stopped on the main Mepis distro, I've since switched to other distros. For example, right this minute I run OpenSUSE 13.1 with KDE most of the time on my desktop. It's setup in a multi-boot config with Windows 8.1, MX-14 and OpenSUSE 13.1; but MX-14 is rarely booted into (it was installed mostly for testing it).

My wife was running Mepis from 3.3 through 11 as her primary OS, and only recently stopped using Mepis 11 (because we recently retired an old Dell Inspiron 1720 she used with Mepis after getting newer laptops).

Right now, she's using Kubuntu 14.10 on an HP laptop (I've got it setup in a dual boot config with Win 8.1 and Kubuntu 14.10). I've tried to make it look and feel as close as possible to her old Mepis 11 setup to reduce any learning curve (even using the same Elegance Theme that Mepis 11 used); and she seems happy with it so far.

She has not used Windows with it at all (only running Kubuntu 14.10 with it). I just left Win 8.1 on it in case it was ever needed for anything down the road.

I have another laptop which is a Dell Inspron 15 (3521 model) that is also running in a dual boot config with Win 8.1 and Kubuntu (14.04 LTS in it's case). But, it really hasn't been used much (it's sitting in a corner in my home office and hasn't been booted into lately).

I do have MX-14 being used as the primary OS on a netbook (Dell Inspirion 11Z) setup in a dual boot config with 64 Bit Win 7 and MX-14). I was using it when away from home on short trips for a while. But, we have a great niece staying with us right now and I've been letting her use that netbook full time with MX-14 (I don't even have a Windows username setup for her, and she has strict instructions not to try and use Windows with it). She likes MX-14 just fine.

I have some older computers that still work that have Mepis on them in dual boot configs with different Windows versions, but they're not being used anymore.

Sure many users probably use several OS's, but I wanted to keep it simple, not account for all variations. In other words what do people spend the most time using. I do not expect to draw firm conclusions. Just trying to get a sense.

What, no Windows?
MX-14; 3.12-0.bpo.1-686-pae kernel using 4GB RAM
2.4GHz AMD Athlon 4600+
NVidia GeForce 6150 LE; 304.121 Display Driver

Well... I selected the "Other Distro" choice in the poll, since I personally use OpenSUSE 13.1 with KDE most of the time with my desktop (Dell XPS 8500). But, as mentioned, I do have one computer (a Dell 11Z Netbook) that runs MX-14 full time that a great niece (my wife's sister's daughter's daughter) that's staying with us has been using full time.

I put Mepis 11 on that Dell 11Z when I first bought it (a couple of years back) and also had Kubuntu installed on it at one point. But, when MX-14 came out, I decided to try it on that netbook, and it's worked fine with it (currently setup in a dual boot config with 64 Bit Win 7 and MX-14; but Windows is not being used with it).

I do have MX-14 setup in virtual machines (in VirtualBox) on my desktop, including some with KDE installed along with applications for KDE (digiKam, GwenView, showFoto, etc.). But, they're not used much. Ditto for other distros (I have a number of other distros setup in Virtual Machines using VirtualBox).

So, for most practical purposes, I use OpenSUSE 13.1 with KDE most of the time on my desktop (sometimes booting into Win 8.1, but Windows is it's not used very often); and my wife is now using Kubuntu 14.10 on a new HP Laptop (given to her recently by her brother. so we retired an old Dell Laptop she was using with Mepis 11).

IOW, the only machine being used much that is using any of the other choices in the poll full time (Mepis, antiX or MX-14) is the Dell 11Z netbook our great niece has been using; and MX-14 works just fine with it. She's been using it every day with no problems. I've got MX-14 setup on it using a Btrfs file system with Snapper making frequent file system snapshots (as you can download the .deb file for Snapper from the OpenSUSE Build Service and that .deb installs just fine in MX-14).

I am posting from my main machine, a Dell Optiplex 780 quad core running M12. I run M11 Roadblock on 2 laptops, 8.0 on 2 other laptops. I have a sort of hybrid M12/MX14 system, with some of the neat stuff from MX14 installed here. Works great!

The main machine (see sig for description) is a dual boot, Mepis 12 beta fully updated, with MX-14 as the other.
Currently posting from Mepis 12, and would say 60% of the time.

MX the rest.

I also have an old Acer laptop for banking, it runs AntiX 13 with its Celron 1.8GHz and 2G RAM.
MX 23.5 on Asus PRIME X470-PRO
AMD Ryzen 3600X (12 threads @ 3.8 GHz)
32 Gig DDR4 3600 (Crucial CL 16)
Nvidia GeForce GT 710
Samsung 970 NVMe nvme0n1 P1-3=MX-23.5, P4=testing
Samsung 980 NVMe =1TB Data, plus 2TB WD =backups
on-board ethernet & sound

Other. Debian Stable Xfce.

Edit:

In my case, sometimes it's hard to say what I spend the most time using. My short answer is that I think of Wheezy Xfce as my main or primary OS. But I'm kinda all over the place, running several distro installations across four computers. I use each of these on a fairly regular basis:

- HP G72: Wheezy Xfce

- Presario CQ56 (a): Wheezy GNOME, Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, Arch (Xfce), openSUSE 13.2 KDE (also Fluxbox), Bridge Linux (Xfce)

- Presario CQ57: Kubuntu 12.04 LTS (also Openbox), Wheezy KDE (also Openbox), ArchBang (Openbox)

- Presario CQ56 (b): CrunchBang (Openbox)
