If audio output's on Automatic, you don't have any options, but changing it to alsa will give you the option of choosing which ALSA device to use. Then you can Save the preference.
The next step is to see how many mess ups I can do for a thumb dive load.

same here. This would be the result of removing xfce-volumed from startup.
