You can add anything that is in the Whisker menu by right-clicking it, and selecting 'Add to Panel'.
Note that it will be at the bottom of the panel by default. To move it where you want, right-click it, select move, and drag the red line along the panel.

I install google chrome (not chromium!) by using a downloaded file google-chrome-stable_current_i386.deb, which so far has always worked. Install using gdebi, then start synaptic and it becomes updatable, works like a peach
Bit further on in the install, vlc loses its audio upon start, fix: right click in the screen - audio, audio device, select sound there.

There is a post on the Xfce forum asking why Skype can't be run on Xfce, so I thought I would report that direct download of 4.2.0 from the Skype site installs and runs beautifully in MX-14 on my AAO 722.

I am almost ashamed to admit that after all the fussing with Samba on MX, I think that I have it figured out. I had reported earlier that I was able to look both ways between my desktop and laptop running any combination of Windows 7 & MX. I do not now think that that was true.
When attempting to access MX from Windows (from either box), I was getting a log-in box requesting a password. I tried everything I could think of with no success. Spent a few hours on the web, & finally stumbled on to how to add a user to Samba. Seems frightfully obvious, now; but, not before.
Here is what to do to allow a Windows box to see an MX box.
On the MX box, obtain Root in terminal.
enter: "smbpasswd -a <username>" & enter.
Mx will then ask for a new password==enter one.
Repeat entering the password.
A reboot is not required, but won't hurt.
While thinking about this, I attempted to create another login for a fictitious user for Samba. Won't work! More research revealed that there must be a user for the machine before becoming a Samba user--Oh Well, so much for me thinking that I had it figured out. Back under my frozen rock.
Again, I appreciate all the assistance given to me, and the efforts of the group for creating this distro.

I opened synaptic found the missing dependency & installed. Afterwards was able to install Google Chrome version: 33.0.1750.146

Where did the dependency come from? Did you have to add any other repo?
It's in the stock Wheezy repo, and there's just one version--no wheezy backports or updates versions to confuse apt. Perhaps the apt update had not been run yet to fill out the apt database?

Yes, I noticed that, too. I went into the VLC audio settings dialog and set it permanently there.
SMPlayer started out on pulse audio (that's what the developer has it set for) and I had to change it to alsa.
