I'm trying it because I need something newer on my desktop.
(I can't get M12 beta to boot; just black screen. I tried all my usual boot codes, but nothing, so here I am.)

I can't login once I install; the login screen just refreshes over and over... ...
hi,

one suggestion that comes to mind would be to ctrl alt f1 or f2 then do your apt-get update and upgrade to find out what is available :smiley2:. first i've heard of this one, but it sounds like x is crashing. noticed your nvidia and it's probably using nouveau which works pretty well when i use it.

sure. inxi from the live session might give our guys a little added information.
:beach: good to see you

Code: Select all

$ inxi -G
Graphics: Card: NVIDIA G84 [Quadro FX 1700]
           X.Org: 1.12.4 drivers: nouveau (unloaded: fbdev,vesa) Resolution: 1920x1080@60.0hz
GLX Renderer: Gallium 0.4 on NV84 GLX Version: 2.1 Mesa 8.0.5
:blurb: gp works from here, live usb with persistence ;) also, checked an installed version of xfce4 and tumbl... not installed.

loco is on the right track - mariel77.

You probably need to install the nvidia driver for your card. When you get dumped out of X, run sgfxi -f as root.

This is an unusual method to find stuff that is installed in most linux's.
Look in /var/cache/apt/archives folder. Here you will find most installed *.deb files. Open the one in question, "samba-help?" or whatever the name of the pkg is. Don't install it, just poke around inside the archive and you'll see the paths to all the files it installed. I would look for something like "samba-help.htm" or "samba-help.pdf"
Once you locate the file you're looking for, then you can locate it in your file system.

mariel77 can also run the 'Nvidia_Install' installer from the Whiskermenu.

Before she doing that though she'll need to update it following the instructions here: http://forum.mepiscommunity.org/viewtop ... 38#p328938 because the installer that came with Beta2 doesn't install the correct driver for GeForce 6xxx & 7xxx cards, that's fixed in the updated version.

If you follow the instructions in that link & install the nvidia driver in a MX14 Live session, it will carryover to a harddrive install.

Well, what I'm suggesting is installing the nvidia driver in the live session, and then reinstalling beta2 to harddrive.
If she's never managed to get into X, she's not really losing anything (other than some time) reinstalling it to harddrive.

If I select the network option. a new window opens that says something like "Network Shares"--I do not remember, cuz I'm in Windows right now. If I click on the "window" option, the whole mess disappears and goes back to the desktop.

I'll reboot into MX & get right back in a couple.

Well, I posted a reply, but don't see it, so I have no idea where it went.

Thank you loco, anticapitalista, and kmathern! :)

Before I saw kmathern's post, I did sgfxi -f as root and it failed to remove nouveau, and I didn't have a 1600x900 display, so I installed it again, and it seems to be OK.

Code: Select all

inxi -G
Graphics: Card: NVIDIA C61 [GeForce 6100 nForce 405] X.Org: 1.12.4 driver: nvidia Resolution: 1600x900@60.0hz
GLX Renderer: GeForce 6100 nForce 405/integrated/SSE2/3DNOW! GLX Version: 2.1.2 NVIDIA 304.119
Is this the correct driver, or should I reinstall using kmathern's instructions? At this point, I don't mind.

NEW Issue:
Regarding the login. After fixing nvidia, I could only login as root. When I looked in the MX User Assistant, I did not find myself, so I created a new user. I was able to login the next time with the new user. I can't see the user that I created on install, but I couldn't create the same one. Is there some way I can remove that user.

Also when synaptic says I have updates, is it safe to install those? It wants to install the Linux 3.12 kernel and headers from
http://ftp.us.debian.org/pool/main/l/li ... o70+1_i386
Do I turn off the wheezy main repo? And just use antix, wheezy security, and wheezy backports?

Thanks!
