M12 has aufs enabled by default, I don't know if there's a way (a cheatcode) to disable it.
lucky9 wrote:...Specifying nouveau should not be necessary either.
M12 uses the Xorg KMS drivers by default including the nouveau driver for nvidia video cards, so you shouldn't need to do anything to enable it.

The 'nouveau.modeset=0 nomodeset' cheatcodes that Tim mentioned are used to disable the KMS driver, and force the vesa driver to be used instead.
A lot of those cheatcodes (video related cheats) aren't included in M12.

GregB wrote:So far no joy. Is there any combination of cheatcodes that can aid in doing a diagnostic as to why X11 is failing to establish a valid GUI screen? I tried doing startx from a text mode console. It produces a log file in /var/log. If this log file has diagnostic value, is there any way that this log file can be saved to a permanent file so that I can post a copy of it?
The /var/log/Xorg.0.log file has diagnostic value. One way to post it would be to install the pastebinit package

Code: Select all

apt-get update
apt-get install pastebinit
And then run it.

It returns a link with the contents of /var/log/Xorg.0.log that you can add to a post:
kent@mepis1:~$ pastebinit /var/log/Xorg.0.log
http://paste.debian.net/72907/
kent@mepis1:~$
This assumes you have a viewable terminal screen while in cli mode, and a working internet connection.

Thanks I'll give pastebinit a try. Is there any particular boot selection that would give the maximum diagnostic value? I can also include a log file from a MEPIS 11 installation that is currently running OK on the same PC. The MEPIS 11 install is running the nvidia driver.

In text mode you would use cp /var/log /home to place a copy in your /home directory. Note the space between log and /. You may need to be root. I'm not sure.
Yes, even I am dishonest. Not in many ways, but in some. Forty-one, I think it is.

It looks like X is starting okay with the nouveau driver, I don't see any errors (EE) or warnings (WW) related to it. There is a 28 second gap in the timestamps (124.208 -> 152.478) that I'm not sure of. There's another 17 second gap a few timestamps later. When I use the nouveau driver on my system the first AIGLX line has a timestamp that's only about .4 seconds after the SELinux line.

It seems like almost everyone doesn't need to do this, but when I use the nouveau driver I need to add a video= cheat, otherwise I'll get a "out of range" message floating around the screen. What I use is video=VGA-1:e, which is the minimal amount of options I need to use for that cheat to work. The 'VGA-1' is the output that the Xorg.0.log says is connected {my Xorg.0.log says it's using the VGA-1 output -- as does your's} , the ':e' forces the display to be enabled. Other options can be added to the video= cheat including xres, yres, vertical refresh rate, etc. More details on the video= options can be found here: http://cgit.freedesktop.org/nouveau/lin ... modedb.txt. To start with you might try the following video= cheats:

Code: Select all

video=VGA-1:e

Code: Select all

video=VGA-1:D

Code: Select all

video=VGA-1:1920x1080@60e

Code: Select all

video=VGA-1:1920x1080@60D

Code: Select all

video=VGA-1:1920x1080R@60D
edit:
One other thing you might try is removing the "splash" cheatcode from the kernel command line just in case the plymouth splash is causing the problem.
{I'm assuming a LiveUSB flash drive created with Unetbootin will let you do that, and also for the video= cheat}.

Also try the "Safe Mode" boot menu option if you haven't already (if the Unetbootin LiveUSB offers a Safe Mode option). The Safe Mode boot option includes the "nouveau.modeset=0" cheat which should force the vesa driver to be used. The Safe Mode boot option doesn't include the nomodeset cheat, but I don't think you need it anyway (you can add it if you want to).

I've been trying your suggestions, including the Unetbootin options. After trying a lot of different video cheatcodes and removing the splash, the screen is still staying blank. I tried to run sgfxi and it ran out of memory before finishing.

How big is the FlashDrive that you're using? sgfxi is a very small script and a downloaded driver from nvidia is less than 60 MB. There should not be a lot of memory needed to run sgfxi.
Yes, even I am dishonest. Not in many ways, but in some. Forty-one, I think it is.

The flash drive is 4GB. I tried running sgfxi again with the same results. It starts installing the driver and after a while it says that it is out of memory and starts to unload a lot of different processes.

I think the Live session runs in RAM using aufs. How much RAM does your system have? The M12 Live session also doesn't automatically make use of a swap partition (if one's available).

I have installed the 173xx series legacy nvidia driver in M12 Live sessions without any problems (i.e. - running out of memory). My system only has 1GB of RAM. The 173xx legacy driver is approx. 15MB, which I think is quite a bit smaller than the latest versions of the nvidia driver.
