Obviously links to MepisLovers are dead because the forum is closed. There may be a way around this. Need to look into it.
No easy solution to this.

The best we can do is for users to report the link and we will have to manually correct each one.

Fun!!! :p

Louie1961 wrote:Two complaints. First, I was using the search function to find a fix that I once posted several months or years ago. I found it, but the links within the thread were dead. They were links to other forum posts. That makes it quite difficult to follow a bread crumb trail back to the original greqat advice. For example

http://forum.mepiscommunity.org/viewtop ... 77#p230477

The link in this post is dead. a minor annoyance to be sure, but sometimes I can remember a post I made, but might not remember enough info to get to the original post without going through one of mine.
Karen was able to give me the link to correct this one. But I see other dead links in that thread. This could get unmanageable.

No, it's not a delay. Message will leave outbox when it's read by the recipient, nice feature.

Am I the only one who finds this new forum a gross inconvenience to use?. Go ahead and flame me if you like; I got plenty of flames when I opposed Mepis going to Ubuntu verses pure Debian but now and then someone has to swim against the current or just shut-up. I used to pop in here more frequent because it was quick and easy to see what was new or had recently changed; sometimes I would login and sometimes not...the whole process took almost no time to get a good summary.... NOT so now, to get a good overview takes a lot of back and forth and frankly I just don't find it pleasing in any way so I find myself with less and less desire to visit the forum at all unless I have a spare 30 minutes or an hour to spare. I don't know what the problems were with the old forum that led to the switch and I'm sure it was done for good reason but at the same time a lot of "ease of use" was lost and it will be nice if it can be worked back in. I also notice a big step backward in the style and appeal compared to the old forum or the community site..... before looked "future" now looks "past". I hope you know I am not speaking without great appreciation of the countless hours of work with putting this all together because I know it was a lot of work and I do appreciate it but I wouldn't consider myself an honest member if I didn't share my personal experience as well. Ok, fire up the torches..... :hot:

It's different and not very difficult to use. After testing it very heavily at the test site, I've grown accustomed to it and have learned to appreciate the new features. You can download richb's introduction from his first post in this thread. It's short but will tell you the main differences.

Not a flame - just an observation. This last posts sounds very typical of the usual 'have used kde4 for an hour and hate it' sort of knee jerk reaction. Suggest you use the new forum for a week - then post. Using it for a couple of days simply isn't enough time.

If there is one thing I absolutely love, it's the ability to go straight to the first unread post in a thread. This feature is marvelous!

As for everything else- it's different, but I'm having fun figuring it out.

If you really want an idea of what's difficult with the new set-up, then spare a thought for Karen, Rich and the main testers - who've had to take all the suggestions and then spend hours trying to figure out how to implement.

As far as the reason for making the change - phpbb is open source, and there is no cost with upgrades. It also has far better spam control. I can attest to the fact that so far spammers have not been an issue since the move. This may change - but it sure beats 5-6 admins / mods spending hours each day trying to keep the boards clear of the rubbish we've been having to put up with.

Jerry - give it a chance OK. Just be prepared to experiment to get know the forum software properly. I personally think this will end up being an improvement over the old ML.

@JBoman. Have you tried "View Unread Posts"? Gives you all the new posts you have not read with one click.

EDIT:I may be biased, but I spent a lot of time on the test forum, and was jumping back and forth between it and MepisLovers. After a short time, once I got used to the differences, I found I preferred the new software. But everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion.

We will continue to take suggestions and make improvements where practicable and possible. But there is no going back.
