Re: New Forum Comments

#91 Post by bigboppercole »

First off, I would like to say congratulations on a job well done. I was a bit surprised when it went to a new forum while clicking on my MepisLovers link. I must have missed the announcement of the work being done and the testing forum.

Now for some feedback:
Roadblock wrote:Great work guys.

A small thing: My post count seems to be substantially lower. I don't mind that, but it also changed the title under my online status from "Mepis Guide" to "Mepis Rules" as well as the number of pyramids showing. I don't mind that either, I just noticed it and thought I would point it out in case it happened to anyone else.

If this has already been discussed, I apologize in advance. ;)

No hurry - Karen's aware and we'll have a look at the old VB when she's had a break. I expect the 600 active members will actually be fewer, as a lot of them will be spammers who haven't posted or users with under 10 posts (so have no rep anyway).

I'm guessing it will probably be only around 100-150 manual edits - and I could do them over a few days once I get the data. I might also be able to have a look at pruning any other obvious non-members (old spammers who slipped through) while I'm doing it.
I think these 2 things work together as well. I understand the need/desire for archiving the older posts, but having my post count cut by more than half and seeing my reputation down to 0 was a bit disheartening. Maybe it's just the egocentrist in me;) Personally I have used both these numbers to judge the experience and respect a poster has.
I also noticed that just giving a person "Thanks" does not add to the "Reputation" the way the old system did.

kmathern wrote:One thing I've noticed is that the original post in a thread and it's replies aren't given post numbers like they were in the old forum.

For instance I think my reply in this thread is post #33.

In the old forum you could refer someone to a particular post in a thread by its number.
Thank you, Yes, we noted that in the test phase. A module addition would be required as it is not in the base software. It is on a desired feature list.
I'm glad to see this is being looked into.

A couple more things I've noticed are missing, and am not sure if they are even available in the new system.
First, the multi-quote option within a thread. I have several quotes here from this thread, which was a pain to compile. Doable, and not something done often, but it sure was a nice feature.
Second, the quote link. Previously if you hit the quote button, it would provide a link to the quoted text. This was especially nice if you were quoting from a different thread.

Overall, I think it's a good step forward. I'm sure there will be things along the way that will need ironing out. Old features missing and not replicable. New features that were never available. And it sounds like the backend will be easier to maintain. A big bonus to the people behind the scenes, and something us users rarely think about.

Thanks again for all the work done.

Al

Brooko wrote: Yep - that's what I meant. Is there a way to bring the old rep in? Like I said, I don't mind editing members individually. I do think it is important. I just need the data.

Do you take PayPal? My reputation could use a little "enhancement". <wink> <wink>

bigboppercole,

Regarding multi quotes, when you are composing a message, if you scroll down you will see posts in that thread with a quote button. You can click that to add those as quotes to your note.

The thanks and rep are different modules, so no interaction.

Starting at 0 rep -- we are an equal opportunity board. ;) Seriously I understand the value, time will take care of it. But Brooko has volunteered to do some manual adding as time permits.

If you guys don't realize this was a huge enterprise to move a forum from one software forum to another and keep all the posts and features as close as possible to the original.

Thanks Karen and Rich and all the people who did the the work and testing.

Thanks, just a different way of doing things I see.

I don't know yet if that's a good or bad thing. It didn't seem like there were many people adding rep other than through "Thanks" previously.

Yes, I understand as time goes on, it will sort itself out to a degree,... until the next forum software change;)

I agree, this must have been a huge project. And also to keep in mind, this is all done by volunteers.

One nice think I just noticed. When you hit the "Preview" button, it will show posts submitted since you started yours at the top of the page.
And using the new "multi-quote" feature, I was able to add Adrian's quote. Nice.

Now if I could just find the "Subscribe" button to add it to Google Reader.

regarding zooming... if you use firefox and a wheel mouse, you can zoom in/out using CTRL+Wheelmouse OR
CTRL + +, CTRL + -, and the zooming sticks for the site.

Thanks, I hadn't noticed them. I was looking for a site wide feed. And I guess I still am;)

Been travelling all day today (start of my 'vacations') so great to see all is up and running now - big shout to Rich and Peregrine who have really been working tirelessly to make this happen, and also to all who've tested and fed back while we've been in transition. Looks great!
I'm about for the next week - then off to Central America Jan 1st for a coupla months, so will only be able to pop in once in a while - will be back with you all in March though - don't worry! (might even need help with fresh install of M11 which should/will be out by then!!)

Great stuff! Happy holidays all!
