Your laptop is seven years old, so you have no need of the AHS version which is specifically aimed at the newest rigs. i suggest that you reinstall with the standard version or down grade to the default Debian 6.1.xxx kernel to see if it has the drivers your touchpad needs.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

It has worked till the xxxxxxx todays update. I'm not willing to reinstall all and spend hours. It's the second time that MX brings me with updates in trouble. The first time was a fine running system 19.3, until an update breaks the bootloader. At this time I've stopped every update in Version 19. Now with version 23 it's the same with the touchpad. MX is a great system, but, slowly in my opinion, with a bad quality system for updates.

Help pls., whow can I get the touchpad working again without a complete reinstall? It works till the login screen, but not after the login.

At j2mcgreg, no, with the normal iso without ahs my system was not able to start.

It may look like, and it's true, I'm pissed. Is the only way to have a long time running system deaktivating the updates? Is there a way to undo them?

This part is interesting. Maybe something about LightDM.

Also you can see the changes with:

Code: Select all

apt-history
(Or right-click on the updater icon: "History" )

In the meantime you can begin / consider using Timeshift (installed ootb, ready in Menu).

@Metaphysik
I just noticed that you are using an MBR partitioning system on a UEFI machine. In early part of the last decade HP switched from true legacy capability to an MBR emulator so users could roll back to Win 7. Linux doesn't work perfectly with the emulator and you can get glitches (as I can personally attest) when using an MBR scheme with the more modern HPs. Like it or not, I think a reinstall is in your future.

Forgot to ask:

Is it the same when on battery / plugged in ?

Also is it ok if you boot with systemd ?

Since I started using MX, I have convinced 3 users to use MX. When I think with an update they could run into the same crap I get sick. I thought updates were supposed to improve things and not ruin things that worked before ...

Yes, but they're mostly from Debian (directly) :)
