FullScale4Me wrote: Fri Feb 21, 2025 5:28 pm Try running the same kernel version on both machines. You may have to install it and reboot. Select it from the Advanced options on the MX Grub boot menu.

For some time the SMB function has been a part of the Kernel and less so of the smbd stand-alone service.
My desktop is using the AHS kernel and the laptop is using the non-AHS one. Not sure how to get the non-AHS kernel on my desktop.
But I did try the last kernel it had in Boot Options, 6.5, and the problem is still there.
I gave 6.1 a try - still has the slowness.

Interesting... and the laptop is roughly 1/3 as fast as the desktop (in cpu ) ...

so... are you booting in Sysvinit when you boot from the snapshot ?

Do you see any difference when you boot sysvinit ?

This sounds to me like your network wire is slow or attempting to do something in networking. Same DNS for both machines?

"Same networking" (other than wifi vs wired ? ( ip mask, gateway, dns etc )?

I think I got it.

In this file:

Code: Select all

/usr/share/gvfs/mounts/smb-browse.mount
I changed this line from this:

Code: Select all

Type=smb-network;smb-server
To this:

Code: Select all

Type=smb-server
And the problem went away! It even survived over night. This morning, the pictures share still opens quickly on the desktop like the laptop.

Now, does anyone know why this worked?

Oh, FFS! I'm so sorry folks!
I could have just not reported this, but feel obligated given the amount of support I got.

As it turns out, the problem was not configuration nor network related.

In Thunar, if I use icon view, everything is fast. If I use list view, it's slow. Of course, right? It's probably populating more meta data in the list view but not in the icon view.

I'm a dope. :bagoverhead:

Sorry again folks!

Hey no worries, tracking down "issues" can be not only time consuming but it can lead into many different places!

Glad you found it.

Please mark as solved using the check mark on the top right of the post that resolved it.
