Keys to try if system locks? (xfce)

#1 Post by jj 5117 »

When everything locks up, what key combo is better to try than the power button?
Is there one to create a crash log?
Are there existing logs I should look for?
--------------------
It almost never locks. Could'a been a power spike while sleeping, or whatever.

Also, I recently reinstalled Win-10 on a separate internal NVMe(1). I think that it touched the MX-generated MBR on NVMe(0). --> So, for that,
is MX Boot Repair "Reinstall GRUB bootloader on ESP, MBR or PBR (root)" the best option? Should I do a full disk backup first?

Boot error code directed me to this log:

Thanks, Tons!

This is not urgent.
I won't be watching any replies very carefully, and will try to avoid having to mess with the system while I get other things done this morning.
Thanks for being there!

Usually with crashes, I try ctrl + alt + back space, first. If that doesn't work I will issue the halt command in a terminal (if I can still open one). The power button on the machine should be the last resort.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

If your system locks up, you can try 'moving' to another tty (command line) session by using Ctrl + Alt + Fn (where n=1-7, I think) rather than just shutting down.

A normal boot brings you to a session on tty7 so if that session has hung or crashed, you can normally move to another session and run htop from there and try to close programs that might be causing the hang or the crash.

You can switch back and forth to the crashed session to see if closing a particular program fixed the session and might allow you to check any logs whilst the system is still 'running'.

An old trick is to try Alt + PrtScrn and then type REISUB. This is called using the Magic SysRq Key.

+1 to @DukeComposed's REISUB tip. This beauty should be better known. Since starting to use MX (sometime in 2018) I've used that about once or twice a year, often after doing something stupid :bagoverhead: , and it invariably has worked as advertised(TM) with no file system trouble or any other problem after rebooting. IOW: I've not once needed to power-cycle any of the PCs I use. Of course YMMV.
Frugal installs on Lenovo ThinkPad L14 Ryzen 5 4650U/24GB * HP Pavilion Ryzen 3 3300U/16GB * Toshiba R950 i5-3340M/12GB
I have a reservation... What do you mean it's not in the COMPUTER!
