You later say that in those instances where the laptop is running via its power brick, that this problem doesn't happen. Does its fan run at a slower rate when on battery power as opposed to wall socket power? You should be able to hear the difference.
We can see from the date on the bios that your laptop is at least fourteen years old. I think that you should open it up, clean out any dust, and replace the thermal paste and then see if the problem has disappeared.
Note: that if the laptop had gone into hibernation or to sleep, you would not initially be able to see the cursor or its movement.
