mx23 xfce 2: scratchy sound of .wav file after wine is installed

#1 Post by krism3 »

let me try again.
No prob w/o wine installed on system. but of course I cannot run these games (except via vbox).

When I add wine (8.12) to MX I get a bit of static preceding playing of a .wav file. This is worse when that same file is used in a wine game. This degrades over time.

Just installed Mint 21.2 (gaa) and when I add wine(6.0.3), I detect no static when playing a .wav file, but DO in a wine game.

In MX it helps to uninstall pipewire-pulse. In another test, uninstalling it and re-installing it also helps.
I have no idea how to find out what is actually wrong (with pulseaudio), or how to correct it.

The games did play fine in oracle vbox in one test, but I would prefer to have it executable straight from the desktop (saves starting win in vbox).

Possibly something in one of these tree tweaks?
https://gaming.stackexchange.com/questi ... am-edition

Also this one off reddit?
In /etc/pulse/daemon.conf set the following:

Code: Select all

default-sample-rate = 48000
alternate-sample-rate = 44100
default-fragments = 2
And, being that it worked "fine in Vbox" .. I have to believe that it is a timing issue.

VBox would both slow it down as well as change HOW the sound is processed... So there are a few clues there. Timing, different sounds drivers come to mind.

Thanks1 I will look at those in the next few days. Up on win at the moment as I just want to "get something done". Also noticed a lot of lagginess in sound and video on vbox so that's not really a solution. I think this prob has been around forever. trick is to find something that works sufficiently well! I have seen talk about those but not tried them yet.

Again, thanks!
later!

remember, pulseaudio supposedly isn't installed per MX Package Installer...
Change the pulseaudio config file /etc/pulse/default.pa, changing this line:
file doesn't exist.
In /etc/pulse/daemon.conf set the following:
file doesn't exist.

env PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 env WINEPREFIX=/location/of/prefix WINE game.exe
made it worse, 30 wasn't bad at all. I will play with that over subsequent boots and report back.

I came home after letting it sit for a while in sleep mode and it sounded different - more scratchy, so adjusted up to 80.

Re: mx23 xfce 2: scratchy sound of .wav file after wine is installed  [Solved]

#7 Post by krism3 »

This post has been redone.

At some point in the process, the "normal" sound of a .wav played may change - no idea why. I don't think it affects the following. For example, mine used to be scratchy. Then it changed to playing quickly twice. That was true before, or after, I had installed pulseaudio. No idea why.

Okay, so after you install wine, pulse audio is fluky. - .wav files don't play correctly.

prep for mod:
1) I took the latency fix off from above suggestion from the command line.
2) I am finally correctly backed up so I am much less likely to lose ground if I do a ssd restore w/o thinking.I wasted a lot of time redo-ing my log and figuring out where I was. You DO want a good clean easy image before you start as you may want to re-do and re-test...

mod:
3) I added pulseaudio with "also install recommended packages".

3a) in files, go to /etc/pulse and right click on daemon.conf and "send" and choose "desktop" . This will allow you to very easily edit this file, which you will need to.

Test and see what you have - I basically had no change at this point - still weird .wav play sound.

4)Assuming .wav is bad, click on your desktop link and add
default-fragments = 1
to the bottom of the file, click save (you will have to enter your password), and close
reboot
test.wav should be okay now but there is no vol control and nothing else will play.
Now, on the fly, you can edit that file and change it back to 4 and save it (without having to reboot) and you will have a volume control and full playback sound, except, of course .wav will sound wonky like it did before you modified default-fragments.

default-fragments = 2 or 3 or 4 all produce the same normal playback result. Changing the frequencies was unnecessary/changed nothing for my situation.

Basically, linux, with wine, is a pulseaudio problematic situation. - basic design flaw somewhere - been there forever.

In this solution you have to keep changing back and forth depending on what you are doing.

marked solved. YMMV of course as all situations are different. 9_9
