MX is Cool

#1 Post by Jly4 »

Just droping in to say that I like the distro so far.
I was using MS, then switching to mint and manjaro, but went back to the mainstream OS, mostly because of "easy" daily use and gaming. Now I decided to drop windows for good, because of privacy and security concerns and here I am... First started with the xfce, since I got the impression most people are suggesting it over KDE. It was pretty decent, but then I went to try out the other flavour of MX and decided to make it my daily OS for my Thinkpad... first of all it's very eye catchy, but I found it also somehow more intuitive then xfce.
Since I became a privacy freak, the last few months, I'll be trying to learn how to encrypt my dns with dns crypt :bagoverhead: ... so if anyone got any tricks and tipps concerning privacy and security just shoot it, I'd be grateful.
Here are my 2 cents on that matter: Invidious is a nice alternative for watching YT videos, without you being watched by the big corpo, same goes for libredd.it and nitter.
And one last thing for the end is a question if someone did tried the palemoonfork called "webbrowser"? I was trying to run it, but I'm to noob and not exactly sure how to... I wanted to check it out, but can't find any guides nore reviews about it.
Cheers!

the MX system "just works"
& that is why we like it, so much.

it's an little more polished than some other Linux Systems, as well.

Before I found MX I spent several weeks distro-hopping to find the best one for me, and the majority of them caused me to utter language that only dogs could hear. MX was the only one that caused me to grin. Not only does it just work but the vast majority of the applications that I normally have to install were already preinstalled. Those that I did need to install from the repositories also worked right away without having any major bugs or anything.

I found MX when it had just graduated from Mepis, and have been here ever since. Like JayM's experience, I found that most needs came with the basic
installation and very few things had to be added. The development team deserve many pats on the back. Only loss has been my tech support to a graphics design hobby group who have remained with Windows. Did try to work with them using Wine but it became too involved. So, MX forever!!
Backup: Dell9010, MX-19_B2, Win7, 120 SSD, WD 232GIB HD, 4GB RAM
Primary :Homebrew64 bit Intel duo core 2 GB RAM, 120 GB Kingston SSD, Seagate1TB.
MX-18.2 64bit. Also MX17, Kubuntu14.04 & Puppy 6.3.

I started with Mandrake, then distro-hopped for years until landing on Mepis. I was dual booting Windows for gaming, but Proton/Steam, Lutris etc. have brought my favourite games to Linux.

MX is a joy to use. It boots to a usable state at least ten times faster than my Windows 10. And I must have saved dozens of hours not having to endure Windows Update.

MX is hot in a cool sort of way!
If it is not broke then don't fix it; and if you can't fix it then don't break it!

I got in on Mepis for a while. Went to PCLinuxOS and had it set up perfectly until I killed the Network. Found MX16 and WOW! Stayed with it until that computer died. Now I'm bouncing around between MX19.4, Manjaro, and a broken PCLinuxOS.
I long for a package manager like Synaptic that supports a dark theme. I could live with CLI package management if I do a little studying.
I miss Firefox from the old days but can't get on board with the forks. Need to try Vivaldi again.
MX has so many tools now and I think the devs really care about making MX a great experience. The #1 Distrowatch ranking is no fluke. It's the real deal.

Calling a Web browser "webbrowser" seems like a terrible idea. Not even Google is effective dealing with stuff like that. I guess it's some kind of fork that keeps Firefox extensions and/or Mac compatibility. If you give me a link I will try it. I feel Pale Moon devs have been too aggressive cutting ties with the past.
Note to self and others: SysVinit is a good option. However if you run into problems try with systemd first. This applies to AppImages, Flatpaks, GitHub packages and even some Debian packages.

I like it for the freedom from windows and anything associated with Bill Gates, hopefully Gates doesn't have his filthy mitts in Linux as well, I like the customization for the Desktop especially using Plasma, as far as being faster I haven't noticed that but I have noticed slower startup and shutdown times using MX compared to Windows, I know there's other distros that are comparable to windows when it comes to that but not MX at least not yet, maybe there's a way to speed things up I don't know about???

Sadly, I must inform you:
https://news.microsoft.com/announcement ... es-github/

No escaping Billy the G.

As far as speeding things up, take a look at /etc/init.d and see if you *need* all the stuff there.
https://www.linux.com/topic/desktop/cle ... p-process/
(For systemd, but the basic services apply to sysvinit)

Also take a look at the cron services conf files.
