I just found this article about the newest version of systemd, boasting "42% less UNIX philosophy," and it has me wondering:
A couple of years ago I added Xfce to antiX (using the antix way, not Synaptic) and kind of had a "truly systemd-free MX-ish Linux." I did it back then because it didn't make sense that MX "has" systemd but "doesn't use it" except as a dependency. Now I'm thinking about it again after reading this article.
What commands would I use after installing antiX-core to "build" an Xfce system (without systemd or elogind)? Is there a script I might copy-and-paste (still pretty technophobic when it comes to the CLI) or can I possibly just use "full," install Xfce, and uninstall the other window managers?
OR, instead of a full desktop environment like Xfce, I wonder if I really need all FOUR window managers? Could I install just one?
Thanks

Re: COMPLETELY systemd-free "MX?"
It used to be possible to turn an installed MX Xfce to completely systemd-free by adding the full antiX repos.
Haven't tried it for a while though.

Re: COMPLETELY systemd-free "MX?"
Thank you! I'm still on MX-21, and in no hurry, but instead of downloading and installing MX-23 I'm thinking about antiX again, maybe with Xfce, or maybe I'll just learn Icewm, which can't be that hard to figure out.
I've had a look at @manyroads's Xfce respin of antiX and that's how I might go if Icewm doesn't fit the bill, so I've got my answer to the first question ("can I install Xfce and get rid of the other WMs"). But the second question remains: If/since I'll like choose Icewm, can the other WMs be safely uninstalled?
Thanks again!

You can safely remove the window managers you do not want/need.

I might give putting Moksha desktop (branch of Enlightenment) on antiX a shot. It worked on Puppy Linux (Bookworm_10.04). Any tips for me? Or just try and see what happens? I don't have anything against IceWM or JWM for that matter, it's just a fun project. Moksha does rip though!! I love that desktop.anticapitalista wrote: Fri Jun 14, 2024 8:09 am You can safely remove the window managers you do not want/need.
