Sound via HDMI not working

#1 Post by Pluto25 »

Dear guys,
this is my first post here, I apologize if I am doing sth. wrong.
My monitor is connected via a HDMI to my graphic card (GeForce GTX 650Ti) but I can't hear the sound from the monitor loudspeakers if playing e.g. a Youtube video. However, as soon as i plug a 3.5 mm cable into the headphone socket at the front of my PC the sound comes from the monitor. To be precise: the 3.5 mm cable is only plugged into the headphone socket, the other end of this cable is not connected with anything. Nevertheless this is neeeded to get the sound from the monitor speakers. So I don't understand why this is necessary and would like to configure (or what else might be needed) correctly to have sound without a loose cable connected to the headphone socket.

I am a Linux newbie, thus please forgive me if I have overseen a very easy or dumb thing ...

Best regards!

Welcome @Pluto25 Check out the manual icon on your desktop.

Section 3.2 covers MX Tools menu, 3.2.16 covers sound card selection.

With no lead in your headphone socket.

In the application menu - mx tools - mx select sound, check if you can select HDMI there, if so select and test, if it works click on apply then close.
If no choice there move on to section 3.6 Sound, it is worth the read.

But jumping ahead, right click the speaker icon in your notification area and select configure audio volume.
Go to audio volume - advance - under profile -see if you can select digital stereo HDMI output.
Test that out, with no lead in your headphone socket.

Hopefully happy tunes ...

Cheers NH

Hello Nix Hard,

thanks for your fast response!

My problem is no now [edited] solved but it seems the issue was:
- open the loudspeaker icon from the taskbar
- click on the "hamburger" menu right from the HDMI/Display port
- here tick the second option "standard" (since all three tick boxes were unchecked)
