Am slowly despairing! I have installed digikam from synaptic. When setting up came the message that I had already installed a more recent version, the database is not compatible!
So I searched here for solutions and found the thread

viewtopic.php?t=53923

Did an update with repo manager to the fastest server. Since then this window appears when trying to update the Synaptic database: see screenshot (in german)
Digikam I still do not have up to date! After hours of searching and despair!
If this continues, I think I'll give up on it.

The translated screenshot:The application package source may no longer be available or may be unreachable due to network problems. If an older package list is still available for this application package source, it is used. Otherwise, this application package source is ignored altogether. Please check your network connection and also make sure that the address of the application package source is entered correctly in the settings.

@ asqwerth: Wouldn't it be an idea to have an extra function in MX Repo Manager to select, not the fastest, but the most reliable mirror? Because it happens quite often that the fastest mirror is not reliable at all...

You could post a suggestion on the main forums or in the Dev/Helper forums.

Hopefully "reliability" can be detected in some way apart from anecdotal experience as to which mirror is reliable. I just worked out through experience what was good or bad, because the geo-located mirror chosen for me upon first installation was always TERRIBLE (yes, I mention it during alpha/beta testing for almost every major release) so the first thing I do is switch MX mirror after installation.

What I do want is more fine-grained control over the Debian mirrors in Repo Manager. Right now it's just "press button to select fastest mirror" which doesn't work for me either. I have suggested that before - ie, just choose a few reliable mirrors in various continents, and lay them out like in the tab for MX mirrors.

Well, by trial and error, I chose one in Germany, after which I was able to reload the sources in Synaptic. But, how do I now get a current, new version of digikam?! Because in Synaptic I still see the old, already installed 4:5.9.0-2!
Currently digiKam 7.1.0 is already released! And I want to have that!
How can I paste this into Synaptic and install it there? Or how else?

Hi,

here my 2cent ...
After also some time looking at repo installations for digiKam, I decided to use the appimage delivered via the digikam homepage for the most recent version.
This works for me without any further issues ...

Thanks for the answer. I have also already loaded, but I do not manage the installation. How to install it? I could only mark it:
"File may be started as a program"
Or is this just an executable and can not be installed at all?

Edit:Now I have this:

viewtopic.php?t=41395

found. It says I should backup the digikam database before trying the appimage.

This results in a new problem!
I have not yet installed digikam in this, newly set up system, dabb I have installed the version, 5.9 from synaptic. But during the setup there was a message that the database was created with a newer version than the current one. True also, I had one in the previous MX installation. Do not remember which one, but I do not know where digikam could even finsen the old database! I did move my hone directory to an extra hard drive and linked it, but only the directories pictures, documents, downloads, music, videos, public and templates! Where digikam find the old database? And, more importantly, how do I find the, to back up!?

No glue about the database issues. If you have nothing already done with digiKam, why backup database? So I would just give it a try.

Regarding installation: As I know it is just about making the appimage File executable .. and execute it (see: https://appimage.org/ )
I have a directory in my home, to which I copied the (few) appimages I run on my system ...

I dared. It worked. I only had to update the database with the new images that have been added since then. How that was done, I have no idea.
Anyway, thanks for the help and encouragement.
