KVM GPU Passtrought RX6800XT not working

#1 Post by AVCESAR »

Hi all,

I have an MX linux PC that I use a KVM server for many virtual machines. One of them is a gaming VM. I want to give it my RX6800XT GPU and I followed this tutorial: https://drakeor.com/2022/02/16/kvm-gpu- ... -tutorial/

Howerver when I arrrive to the
Loading the Correct Kernel Modules
step and check if it worked with
lspci -nnk
I get:

Code: Select all

08:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Navi 21 [Radeon RX 6800/6800 XT / 6900 XT] [1002:73bf] (rev c1)
Subsystem: XFX Limited XFX Speedster MERC 319 AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT Black [1eae:6701]
	Kernel driver in use: amdgpu
	Kernel modules: amdgpu
08:00.1 Audio device [0403]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Navi 21/23 HDMI/DP Audio Controller [1002:ab28]
Subsystem: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Navi 21/23 HDMI/DP Audio Controller [1002:ab28]
	Kernel driver in use: vfio-pci
	Kernel modules: snd_hda_intel
Apparently the amdgpu is booting too fast and taking control of my gpu before vfio-pci.
I don't know how I can solve that.

Any ideas?

With that newer hardware, I would suggest running MX AHS instead. You would have to update the kernel afterwards, but can add ahs to the MX main repo URL and then upgrade everything else to get to the AHS level.

And of course, make a snapshot with MX Snapshot, Timeshift, or another backup tool first, just to be safe.

Isn't AHS a bit unstable compared to the regular distro?

Unless you have very old hardware AHS is probably more stable, it is simply newer Kernels and firmware/drivers for certain hardware. As an example I have an AMD Threadripper machine that was completely flaky and unhinged until Kernel 5.14 came out so in my case at the time AHS saved the day. Like any updates if something is working well and you make a change then it will always be a roll of the dice but how stable or unstable AHS is more a question of your particular hardware than the AHS Repo itself.

Yes like the others are saying you need to upgrade your kernel and firmware versions. AHS

This is what you need to see amdgpu needs to be listed in the VGA compatible controller

Yes that's what I see.

Code: Select all

$ lspci -nnk | grep -i -EA3 "3d|display|vga"
04:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation GP108 [GeForce GT 1030] [10de:1d01] (rev a1)
Subsystem: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd GP108 [GeForce GT 1030] [1458:375c]
	Kernel driver in use: nvidia
	Kernel modules: nvidia
--
08:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Navi 21 [Radeon RX 6800/6800 XT / 6900 XT] [1002:73bf] (rev c1)
Subsystem: XFX Limited XFX Speedster MERC 319 AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT Black [1eae:6701]
	Kernel driver in use: amdgpu
	Kernel modules: amdgpu
Are you sure I have to see it with amdgpu driver? Because the guide says I am supposed to have vfio-pcie on it.

This is what you need to see amdgpu needs to be listed in the VGA compatible controller

To be sure I understand the manipulation well. I have to add the AHS repos and than update my distro. But does the kernel upgrade get done by itself or do I have to do it myself?

Stevo wrote: Mon Nov 21, 2022 5:33 pm With that newer hardware, I would suggest running MX AHS instead. You would have to update the kernel afterwards, but can add ahs to the MX main repo URL and then upgrade everything else to get to the AHS level.

And of course, make a snapshot with MX Snapshot, Timeshift, or another backup tool first, just to be safe.

I found a way to isolate the gpu from the host machine.
I added to the /etc/modprobe.d/vfio.conf file this line:

Code: Select all

softdep amdgpu pre: vfio_pci
Then I had to run these two commands:

Code: Select all

sudo update-initramfs -u
sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
And now the amd gpu is under vfio-pci.
