Okay, I bought a BrosTrend AC1200 Wi-Fi adapter from Amazon. It arrived today on schedule and I unboxed it and checked it out. It has a USB 3 interface and came with a mini-CD that contains instructions for installing it on Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. The Linux instructions were pretty simple. You insert the device, copy and paste a very long command into your terminal, press Enter and the necessary driver is automatically installed. Reboot and you're done. I did a test on Speedtest.net and got a transfer rate of 117 Mbps which is way more than I could ever use at any one time. it has a 2-year warranty. I've used it for only a few hours, but so far it looks good. Here is a link to the Amazon page:

Will this Wi-Fi to USB adapter work with MX? [Solved]
Re: Will this Wi-Fi to USB adapter work with MX?
Interesting! Often, there's already a driver for it already in the Linux kernel.
Could you copy and paste the output of "inxi -Nxx" from the terminal to here so that we can see what's inside the gizmo?

Re: Will this Wi-Fi to USB adapter work with MX?
I also found this answer on the Amazon page from about two years ago:
The customer support indicated that you also needed a working Net connection in order to allow the deb package on the CD to download more data to build the driver.Hello, the chipset of BrosTrend AC1L USB wifi adapter is Realtek RTL8812AU, while we will upgrade the chipset to Realtek RTL8812BU in the coming several months.
Even though BrosTrend AC1L comes with an upgraded chipset, its supporting Linus OSes will be the same and our manual for driver installation will be applied for both chipsets.
Re: Will this Wi-Fi to USB adapter work with MX?
Stevo,
Here is the output from the terminal that you asked for:
$ inxi -Nxx
Network: Device-1: Realtek RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet vendor: ASUSTeK
driver: r8169 v: kernel port: e000 bus ID: 05:00.0 chip ID: 10ec:8168
Device-2: Realtek type: USB driver: rtl88x2bu bus ID: 1-4:2 chip ID: 0bda:b812
And yes, I forgot to mention that you need to have a working internet interface on the computer to do the installation. I happened to have another USB Wi-Fi device that I used for this.

Re: Will this Wi-Fi to USB adapter work with MX?
Yeah, this thing: https://deviwiki.com/wiki/Realtek_RTL8812BU_USB_Module
So they did switch the chipset. It currently is not supported in the kernel, so needs that Windows-style driver install.

Re: Will this Wi-Fi to USB adapter work with MX?
By the way, even though this device has a USB 3 interface, it is not the same form factor as your average USB memory stick. It is about twice as wide, so if you have two USB ports that are side by side, you probably will not be able to fit another device into that port. Kind of inconvenient, but with the high transfer rate that it provides, it's a small price to pay.
