Old scanner with doc-feeder isn't Linux friendly, is the brother ads line worth it?

#1 Post by Green_Penguin »

Hi, still trying to transition, discovered that my old scanner with doc-feeder isn't Linux friendly. A little bit of web searching and the general consensus steers me toward the brother line. They seem a bit expensive, but this might be a get what you pay for situation. The most affordable option, (for my use case) seems to be their ADS-1200. One step above that there's the ADS1300, and a step above that the ADS-3300W. Are there more affordable Linux friendly options worth considering, or should I just follow the wisdom of crowds and go with brother? Also, are they a brand were the most affordable option in a line is still solid quality, or the kind of brand were it's wise to be one step up from that for quality reasons?

What is your old scanner ?

Have you tried NAPS2 on it?
https://www.naps2.com/download

I have found NAPS2 to be very good with scanners in general, and very friendly.

I have several ADS-1200's out in the windows world and they are very decent. Unfortunately, I do not have anyone on linux on one.

The Canon LIDE 400 is Linux friendly and priced around $100.00 here in Canada. Note that less expensive LIDE 300 model is a right pain to get to work with Linux.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Thanks for pointing this out, it's definitely a powerful tool, but it still doesn't detect my old epson.

The high resolution of this is really nice, but it doesn't look like it supports a docfeeder attachment.

No, it's just a manual flat bed scanner. You're not going to find a stand alone doc feed scanner in that price range and you might be better off looking for a multifunction printer instead.

Epson Perfection 4490 Office
Epson Perfection 4490 Photo
Sorry about the oversight, it's one of these two, probably the photo model? But they look identical. Tried the Iscan driver pack.

Thanks you're the best! This is kind of embarrassing, but I must have made a wrong turn on that site somewhere when I was trying to find the driver bundle, and snagged the wrong one. It's working now! That's a huge help, especially considering a quality replacement wouldn't have been cheap.
