Black Screen can only boot with nomodeset

#1 Post by WyCKyD »

Hello, I have searched the forums and have tried a few things to resolve the issue of not being able to boot without nomodeset. I was using kernel 5.10.0-19 when this happened. I have an AMD RX580 video card and everything was working fine up to about a week ago, when I went to start the computer and it booted but with a black screen. I restarted and added the nomodeset to the boot line and was able to boot just fine.

A little back story of what led up to being unable to boot. I've been trying to get Davinci Resolve working on MX and I have been able to get it working, however at a cost. In trying to get it working, I installed the AMD video drivers from the website but they didn't work, so I uninstalled them with the 'amdgpu-install --uninstall' line. Since uninstalling the drivers, everything was working fine, until about a week ago. In order to correct the issue, I went back to kernel 5.10.0-18 and still the same effect of booting to a black screen. I then installed kernel 6.0.0-4 and tried that. It seemed to fix the issue, but if I restart or shut down and wait a little to restart, the same black screen appears although the computer continues to boot. I then tried boot repair to fix the grub, and it seemed to fix the issue, but when I restart, same thing.

If there is anything that I can try, please let me know. I am tired of having to boot with nomodeset and having to boot this way makes Davinci Resolve unusable. Here are my specs.

I just changed themes in MX Boot Options and was able to boot without having to use nomodeset. Here is my system specs now:

The only thing that I changed was the theme in Boot Options. Can anyone explain this?

Nope. Went to turn on the computer this morning and it is doing the same thing. I can only boot with nomodeset. Anything I can try besides reinstalling everything?

Thanks in advance,

I installed the AMD video drivers from the website
Can you elaborate about how you did this?

What if you change splash to nosplash this time?

Oh la la :

Code: Select all

echo -e 'amdgpu\n\nloop' | sudo tee /etc/modules

Code: Select all

echo 'amdgpu' | sudo tee -a /etc/initramfs-tools/modules

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe amdgpu ; sudo update-initramfs -uk all
Reboot

(In fact, just the last one would be enough, but the first two are "belt and braces" :) )

@Huckleberry Finn I will try that now and let you know how it goes.

As you might already know: When everything's fine: "MX Snapshot" from menu and create your own iso (and keep it somewhere) :)

Just btw (and if you like only): You can remove the unneeded kernels simply with 1-2 clicks with "MX Cleanup" - ('Kernel Removal Tool' below the window)
