Boots on my desktop fine but on my toshiba laptop I get the black screen with blinking cursor. It takes several minutes but it eventually boots to login screen. The whole process takes 4 to 6 minutes on my laptop to complete. Don't know why but eventually always boots on up.

Yes was a dependency issue. Thanks for all the help and thanks Stevo for the verification of why. Backports and VB are disabled now and thanks for that as I never intended to have left backports enabled and and had not paid any attention to repos until this happened. Just Google search for the pin outs and or wiring diagram and you should find what you need. They are being modified to work as a remote pendant to run milling machines and 3d printers also.

My old nvidea doesn't work in 19.1 so I assume it is using the default but I am getting screen tear and lockup when attempting to use several different apps. The most recent was conky manager. When it does the screen tear it locks up and requires a reboot. Will the suggestion by Rose fix that?. Thanks

Ok, maybe try Mx tools Mx codecs installer and see if missing codecs may be the problem.
