Re: Worry About 3rd Party Data Collection?

Plus EVERY phone sold has a gps chip and imo, the simpler it is the less likely you are in separating the radios inside, meaning your gps is always on. Great if you are actively tracking someone's every move, what the govt does, but terrible if you actually believe in privacy as a God-given right ...

Re: Worry About 3rd Party Data Collection?

It is a PITA for sure. I have to set aside a block of time to get 'into the zone'. Gather instructions, various files, etc. It takes me far too long, and makes me nervous too, taking some years off my life with every attempt. The worst that can happen is that you'll end up throwing your phone in ...

Re: Looking to buy a new laptop. Help appreciated

Chromebook have a problem that they are connected and hosted on the web. They are basically a thin client computing with most of the processing offloaded to the cloud. Works for some but not for me. That's certainly how Google would have us use them. But some Chromebooks can have all the Google ...

Re: Looking to buy a new laptop. Help appreciated

Kudos for avoiding Chromebook type laptops. I've used some great Chromebooks, and they can be terrific value for money, if you shop around. The problem, of course, is stripping all the horrible Google rubbish off, and installing a real Linux. Even now, there's no good documentation (that I know of ...

Re: Worry About 3rd Party Data Collection?

To actually have OFF mean OFF, you need custom firmware on the small selection of phones / tablets that can take open-source custom firmware. I can't comment on Apple, but Android is an advertising platform. Tracking your location is part of how that platform is implemented, and I don't think that ...

Re: Apps won't start or slow to start

For more context, I've used various Linux flavours for about 10 years on various computers, including Raspian. ... What isn't clear to me, and perhaps isn't to others, is what version(s) of Linux you've used on the computer that is the subject of this thread, and how well they worked. I was under ...

Re: Apps won't start or slow to start

I have tried five different Linux flavours over the last few months on the same drive before settling on MX. [...] I suspect there's a problem with either graphics drivers or some other system setting. I like MX Linux, but I think it emphasises stability over modernity. I suspect that, depending on ...

Re: Looking to buy a new laptop. Help appreciated

I've always been amazed at how much better the specifications I can get with refurbished hardware, compared to new hardware of the same price. Also, I've found that older machines have fewer problems with Linux compatibility.

Re: A Challenge to the Naysayers

Also as the initial point was mean who cares what hardware configuration a random poster on a forum uses? If you don't care, I respectfully suggest that perhaps you should. If you have not already, look into 'browser fingerprinting', to see how clever the data harvesters are, at building up real ...
