I got a suggestion to use Gnome-Disk-Utility. It worked great on MX and much easier for me as a basic user than other approaches. But I learned much from the various proposed solutions. Appreciate all your help.

Thanks to all for your help! Charles V "wise" advice seemed to solve it. For some mysterious reason speaker volume on ALSA was zero. I increased the volume setting there, restarted the computer and speakers work! If it ever happens again I'll know how to check ALSA settings.

I'm not exactly sure, but I think the very "wise" advice of Charles V solved it. For some reason the speaker volume in ALSA was zero. I changed that and after a restart everything worked. Hopefully it keeps working. Thanks to all for your help. Much appreciated.

Okay everything working well now. Installed pipewire, lsp-plugins and easyeffects as suggested. One warning easyeffects didn't load until after I restarted. Thanks to all!

Thanks. If I install that first then pulse effects and easy effects should install without a problem? Which do you recommend? I just want a simple equalizer.
