I use a Latitude E7450 with docking station. For the external displays config I used the Display utility shipped with MXlinux, or you may also use xrandr from the cli or for scripting.

I'm suffering the same issue, my dell latitude (with embedded gpu) display and keyboard backlight turns on, but no activity whatsoever (other than the hdd light making a pulse).
Is there any way to capture in which state the machine is in that situation? ( $ sudo journalctl -rb -1 seems to shows ...

You are correct, it's not the newest. Like lots of MX Linux components. MX Linux is based on debian stable which is deliberately not the newest. We do update the graphics stack periodically in our AHS repo and libva is due for a refresh.
But that's unlikely to change anything in your situation ...
