According to https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/184367/scanimage-does-not-find-scanner-unless-sudoed-but-shows-up-with-sane-find-scan this could be due to wrong permissions. Does scanimage detect the scanner when run with root privileges (sudo)?

If this is not the case, does scangearmp2 work ...

how did you install MX? I guess you used two usb sticks. One ist the installer-stick and the other is the stick on which you installed MX, right? Was the 32gb-stick plugged in the same computer as it was during the installation process?
