Thanks @Jerry3904 for your attention to this problem, I read the post on Raspberry Pi forum, Wayland on Raspberry Pi OS etc.
I'm going to wait until someone sorts this problem out for the MX 23 respin, until then it's a piece of cardboard covering the front of the monitor held there by magnets.

I recently tried to get redshift working on a new install of mx23.3 on a different computer and I was unable to get it to work, I created a file redshift.conf @ ~/.config/redshift.conf just as I had done back in March 2022.
with file contents like this:
[redshift]
temp-day=5700
temp-night=2700

So when you say "But the hardware backlight probably wouldn’t unless the display had an accessible interface. Most external devices do not" are you saying that the brightness systray makes adjustments via the monitor's backlight?

I've been running mx23.1 respin for arm on a Raspberry Pi5 for quite a few months, I installed PyCharm, GDLauncher for Minecraft and loads of other stuff, it's amazing.
But since I installed mx 23.1 on the Pi the brightness systray control for the screen does nothing, the menu comes up but the ...
