It's likely that the only driver still available for your existing NVidia network card requires SystemD .That seems unlikely to me. When booting in systemd, systemd-resolved handles DNS. I don't remember what initscript handles it in sysv but I would think it more likely that's the place to look ...

There is an MX Samba Confif which will do sharing, along with Thunar too. The MX tool is pretty good at setting up shares.

Working through the firewall is a little more difficult, but it sounds like you got that too.
