I had a corrupt installation of Network manager.
The internet wouldn't work at all but I managed to force the network card to work with this command:
sudo dhclient eth0
Then you need to delete the broken network manager installation using synaptic. or try this:
sudo apt-get remove --purge ...

Try installing PIA VPN. Available from MX Package installer. It is a nice app similar to the ones you find in Windows. Very easy to install and has VPN from different countries.
