No such file or directory is reported, when I ran the xorg.conf command. And I tried your previous suggestion in MX Tweak, to no avail.

Hi, thank you. Both resolutions you mention appear in Display - Resolution. However, when I select either one of them, the screen turns black for a few seconds then goes back to 2880 x 1800. In other words, no change.
I have also updated the kernel as you suggested. No change.
