Could it really be coincidental that the sound just happened to stop working when I chose to install MX23?
Anyhow, I'm very pleased that my machine is back up and running and hopefully now makes it past 20 years of useful computing thanks to Linux and the kindness of the good folk of this ...

Re: Upgrade from MX19 to MX 23 - No Sound! [Solved]
You can copy sound card test into the Terminal without #!/bin/bash , or you can make a script from that test. Command inxi -A | grep Server tells the active audio server.
If inxi -A | grep Server returns nothing, then plain alsa is in use. Sounds are working with plain alsa too if pipewire or ...

Re: Upgrade from MX19 to MX 23 - No Sound! [Solved]
Pipewire is conflicting with pulseaudio, so one of them must be removed. To see them install status
apt-cache policy pipewire
apt-cache policy pulseaudio
If removing pipewire, also pipewire-bin need to remove.
RJP thanks for the suggestion. Here is the output:

Re: Upgrade from MX19 to MX 23 - No Sound! [Solved]
I'm going to jump in here with this. Assuming that audio worked fine with MX 19, I think that you should use MX Package Installer (MXPI) to install the AntiX 4.19 kernel, reboot and at the Grub screen select Advanced Options and then mark the 4.19 kernel as the boot choice for this session. Does ...

@CharlesV
I have tried plugging the headphones in and back out again. I can hear them crackle as I do this. I think that the headphones are still working at least!
I can't spend anymore time on this just now.
I'll get back to it tomorrow, if there are more suggestions.

AV Linux,
Many thanks for the quick reply.
What soundcard are you wanting the headphone output from?
There is onboard sound on the motherboard, which I switched off in bios when I first switched from Win7. That is still switched off.
There is sound from the graphics card to the TV which I use ...

AV Linux,
Thank you for the reply.
Yes, I did a fresh install of MX23. Sorry, I did not make that clear.
I had previously been running MX19 for the past 5 years, with thankfully very little intervention, after the initial teething trouble.
