Solved. Required a reboot, but download successful finally.

The MX Codecs Installer menu item fails immediately after a new install of 17.1 June 64-bit. It starts by executing

wget -qO- http://deb-multimedia.org/dists/stable/main/binary-amd64/Packages.gz | zgrep ^Filename | grep libdvdcss2 | awk '{print $2}'

which fails with

CANNOT CONNECT TO THE DOWNLOAD ...
